Narrative

[Article "Floyd Thomas Sr." from Huntington County, Indiana History & Families 1834-1993, p387.]

Floyd Thomas Sr. was born 1898 in Union Twp., Huntington County to Lewis and Rose Smith Thomas. He attended Macedonia, a one room school, finishing high school in 1916 at West Union High.

He bought his first 40 acre farm on 500 E. before he was out of high school. He farmed his land and helped his father until Lewis's death. He paid off the mortgage a few dollars at a time from proceeds from the farm and by hauling stone from the local roads.

Floyd met his future wife, Mary Bayha at Bluffton Street Fair through her sister. Several years later they met again on a blind date, arranged by a cousin of Mary's, Paul Hurdle, a good friend of Floyd's. They were married in the spring of 1921 and moved to his farm house in June.

They had four children: Floyd "Tommy" Jr., Jane Anne, Dean, and Bobby. In the spring of 1931, Floyd and his father bought 127 acres on 500 E. This was previously owned by Shalter Thomas.

The family had the usual mild illnesses, injuries and disappointments, besides a life full of joy and contentments. But in the early part of 1941 tragedy struck Bobby in the form of a serious undiagnosed illness. In spite of the efforts of his frantic parents it remained untreated until early August when he was taken to the Sawyer Sanatorium at Marion, Oh. He was diagnosed with a strange form of encephalitis. Though he was treated, the damage was too great, and later that year Bobby lapsed into a coma from which he never recovered. He died at home in 1957.

Phil, the fifth child of Floyd and Mary, was born Feb. 2, 1942 on Bobby's and his grandfather's birthdays. Bobby came home in April to stay, and the family was hard pressed to care for a comatose bedfast son, a new baby and deal with mounting bills. By pulling together, and with the help of Mary's youngest sister, Ruth Bayha, the family managed to come through smiling, stronger and more compassionate.

Dean and Tommy farmed with their father until Floyd's death in 1974. Then the four remaining children formed a corporation with Dean and Tommy still managing the farm operation. Tommy married Kathryn Stonebraker in 1944 and they moved to the house on the 40 acres. Later they moved to his grandfather's house.

Dean married Martha Blocker in 1953. She was the daughter of Ernest and Esther Blocker. Dean and Martha lived in the "Honeymoon Cottage" on the 40. In 1965 they adopted a son, Kent Allen, only a few months old. Unfortunately he was a rubella child and was left with multiple handicaps. He is currently in North Willow at Indianapolis, a combined school and home where he seems happy. Martha died suddenly in Florida while on vacation in early 1992.

Jane Anne and Phil moved to Flagstaff, AZ in 1961. Phil died in Phoenix from a freak fall in 1985.

Floyd was a leading force behind the publication of the history of the schools in Union Twp. He worked tirelessly gathering material, talking to people and putting the book together.

Floyd and his sons helped build and plan the Conservation cabin which still stands. It was a meeting place for the club and a community center for many years. It closed in 1990, but the playground is still used by neighborhood children.

Floyd helped organize the State Bank of Markle and served on the board of directors until his death.

Floyd and Mary were devoted parents, strong willed and strong in personal values which they transferred to their children. I am blessed to have been their daughter. (Submitted by Janne Anne Thomas.)
