Narrative

Note: Spelling Rosanna Thomas' name

On her gravestone, and on some Thomas family documentation, her name is given as "Rosanna." In some family documents, her middle name is sometimes "Ann" instead of "Anna." On the record of her marriage to Lewis S. Thomas, her name is given as "Rosa A. Smith." In the article on her husband's father's family (Sampson Monroe Thomas) in the Wells County, Indiana Family History 1837-1992, her name is given as Rose Anna.

ADDENDUM: I've since found a few items signed by her, including books she owned to which she noted her name inside the front cover - and she was quite consistent in signing her name "Rosa A. Thomas," suggesting that her birthname was likely Rosa Anna Smith. The shortening to "Rosanna" was likely a family colloquialism that stuck.
