Narrative

[Obituary for Henry S. Smith, paper and date unknown; clipping from the files of Jane Anne Thomas.]

Henry S. Smith, an old and well-known citizen of Union township, died Tuesday evening after an illness of eleven days, with typhoid fever, aged about 75 years. Mr. Smith removed to this county in 1865 from Morrow county, Ohio, since which time this county has been his home. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his death. The funeral occurs today, leaving the house at 10 o'clock, and the interment will be made at Roanoke.

Narrative

Note: Henry S. Smith

Henry S. Smith and his first wife, Sarah Walker, are mentioned in the biographical article of their son John K. Smith in the History of Huntington County, Indiana: A Narrative Account... by Frank Sumner Bash (p710). It mentions that he was born in Pennsylvania, where he married Sarah Walker before moving to Morrow Cty, Ohio and then on to Huntington Cty, Indiana in 1864. Sarah died in March of that year, so they likely would have come a bit sooner. The article mentions another son, "Jerre W." who would presumably be Jeremiah W. Smith, father to Rosanna (Smith) Thomas.

I have not yet found a marriage date or location for Henry and his wife Sarah, though I suspect they did not marry until at least 1840 - their oldest son, Joseph, was not born until approximately 1843, when they were both around the age of twenty-five.

After Sarah's death in 1864, it appears that Henry remarried at least once and possibly twice; in the 1870 US Census is listed Maryland-born Mary J. Smith, age 51, presumably his wife but also possibly an unmarried sister or a widowed sister-in-law. In the 1880 US Census is listed Ohio-born Susan Smith, noted as his wife and with her age given as 54. Further research into these women's identities will need to be done.

ADDENDUM: While I have not found much to establish the identity of Henry's second wife, Mary, the girl living in his household in the 1880 US Census gives some indication as to the potential identity of Henry's third wife, Susan. That girl, Lettie (or Letta) Settlemyre, was the daughter of Charles William Settlemyre and his wife Mary Amanda Hathaway. Both Charles and Mary Amanda had died before 1880, when Lettie was still a young girl - thus leading Lettie to reside in Henry's household in 1880.

Lettie's relation to Henry's household did not become apparent to me until finding Susan's 1900 US Census listing, still placing her in Union Twp, Huntington Cty, Indiana, but this time with the young widow Lettie Hurley and her two young daughters. Lettie is named "niece" in this listing, which would indicate that Susan is her aunt. What is not clear in this discovery is whether Susan was a sister to Charles or Mary Amanda, nor is there any indication as to whether she had been married previous to her marriage to Henry - though it seems likely that she was also a widow when she and Henry wed.
