Narrative
[Obituary for Mr. Rebecca Ann Smith, from the Huntington Press, Thursday, 28 Oct 1926.]
Despondent over ill health, Mrs. Rebecca Ann Smith, 78 years of age, walked into a sheltered spot in a berry patch near the home of her son-in-law, Lewis Thomas, seven miles east of Huntington, where she lived, and drank several ounces of carbolic acid yesterday afternoon about 1:30 o'clock. She died a few minutes later.
The body was found by Mr. Thomas who, alarmed by the unexplained absence of his mother-in-law, had gone in search of her. When found, Mrs. Smith was lying on her back, the bottle of acid an arms length from her.
Seemingly, Mrs. Smith had contemplated committing suicide for some time. About a year ago, she had been affected by a skin ailment on her feet. Last week she remarked that this was troubling her again. She urged her son-in-law to get her a little carbolic acid for this had "helped it before and should help now."
VISITED GRANDDAUGHTER.
Tuesday the Thomas family went to the lakes and left Mrs. Smith with Mrs. Charles M. Paul of this city, a granddaughter. Mrs. Smith then gave Mr. Paul some money to purchase for her a little carbolic acid. He did not buy the acid, however, so when Mr. Thomas returned that evening, he bought it. That evening Mrs. Smith asked for the acid and Mrs. Thomas gave it to her, suspecting nothing. Later Mr. Thomas questioned her action, and his wife went into Mrs. Smith's room and diluted some water for her use on her feet. Mrs. Thomas started to take the bottle out of the room but Mrs. Smith remarked that the children might get it and that it could be placed behind her trunk. This was done. Afterward Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Smith sat and talked for some time.
As it was the custom of Mrs. Smith to go for a short walk after dinner, nothing was thought of her absence. She had been seen in front of the house and had then gone to the barn. Mrs. Thomas, becoming suspicious, went to her room to look for her and found the bottle of acid gone. She then called her husband.
ILL SEVERAL YEARS.
Mrs. Smith had suffered from tuberculosis for several years.
Mrs. Smith was born October 28, 1848 in Huntington county to Mr. and Mrs. Clark DeWitt, and was married to Jeremiah W. Smith. There were seven children. Her husband and three children have died. The surviving children are Mrs. Lewis Thomas, George H. Smith of Allen county, LeRoy Smith of Huntington, and Mrs. Lucile (Fred) Chaney of Fort Wayne. There is one brother, Lorenbo [sic] DeWitt. There are ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday at the Union church, the minister being the Rev. Charles Brown.
Burial was in the Feightner [sic] cemetery.
