Narrative

[Article "Caley Family" from Zanesville, Indiana History 1849-1976, pp53-54.]

Samuel Caley I married a Duckwall girl.* They lived three miles south of Zanesville. Samuel had eight children; Samuel II, Lewis, Manuel, Frank, Suzanne (Caley Kohr Thomas, refer to Rev. D. Thomas Family), Lize, Adeline and Steve. (*Sarah Duckwall)

We know that Samuel II [sic] prempted land 1 mile south of Zanesville on Rd. 3 about 1847. In 1849, people depended upon Samuel and his son, George, for mail delivery for the Caley men rode horseback to Roanoke for the mail and established the 1st mail route, opening their home for a Post Office. (First house 1 1/4 miles south of Zanesville on the west side.

Lewis Cass Caley married Caroline Platt. Their children were: Frank, George, Alberta Rogers, Harley M., Elbridge, Vern and Marvin. (Ina & Milo) were from another marriage to Samantha Ogle. Harley married Clara Mae Heaston, and their three children were Eldon, Eunice Bright and Elma Kitt. Eldon lives south on Rd. 3, near Markle.

Manuel was the father of Riley, France, Emery, and Clarence.

Frank had a son named Elmer and a son Samuel III, who moved closer to Markle, buying the site of the present Richard Wood home. Samuel's son, Cliff later lived on this site. Cliff, his wife, Cresie, his brother-in-law, Dr. Haiflich and his wife Zoa were killed in 1959, at the corner of Rd. 116 and Rd. 303. They had four children; Janice, Bill, Barbara and Don. Cliff's son, Bill, moved into the house and in 1965, he and his four children were killed on that same corner. Frank's descendants now living closest to Zanesville would be Barbara, who married Hubert Girvin and their children; Gary, Larry, Lisa, and Vince. Gary is presently Auditor of Wells County.

For Suzanne Kohr Thomas' descendants (refer to David Thomas Family).

Steve married Irene Jones, (daughter of John Jones and Sarah Kohr - Refer to John Jones family). They had seven children; Jen (Tumbleson), Fred, Grover (Jack), Homer, Earl, Dick and Dewey. They moved to Zanesville about 1918, to a farm east of town.

Earl Caley, age 87, lives in the house his father bought in 1900. It was built around 1875 and is situated on the south side of the County Line Rd., just three lots east of Rd. 3. His brother, Dick, who is 83, lives just one block from him, across from the U.B. Church. They are the two oldest male residents of Zanesvile in this bicentennial year. Their brother Jack, passed away late in 1975, just before his 90th birthday. Direct descendants of this family still living in the Zanesville area are: Jack's family; a son, Jim Caley; his daughter, Connie Bowman; her children Nick and Jami; a daughter, Maxine Brickley, her daughter, Sharon Heyerly; her children, Jeremy and Gina. A grandson, Von, also lives with Maxine.

Dick Caley's family; a daughter, Betty Waggoner; her children, Carol and Kent; a daughter, Helen Brindle, and her son Billy.

Homer and his cousin Harley were killed in a car accident.

[Editing note: The text from which this article was drawn was published in 1976 by a small local circular from Ossian, Wells Cty, Indiana, and was collected and edited by three local women from their research as well as submissions from other local residents. The article as seen here is reproduced without corrections for grammar or formatting errors; there are only two egregious content errors of which I'm aware. One is that the land preemption was for Samuel Burdell Caley, referred to in the article as "Samuel I," and not his son "Samuel II," Samuel Henry Caley; I have a copy of the original pre-emption bearing Samuel Burdell's signature. The second is that Samuel Burdell and his wife Sarah had ten children, not eight - the author missed Juliann, an infant death from 1844 who lived less than two weeks, and John William, who left the region at some point and moved to Washington State, where he died in 1937, with his remaining descendants scattered around the country, from Pennsylvania to California.]
