Narrative
[Obituary for John Hinklin, paper unknown; posted to the FindaGrave.com website.]
[headline] "John Hinklin's funeral will be held Saturday"
Funeral services are set for 10 a.m., Saturday in the Hughes-Hyll Mortuary on Mt. Vernon Ave. for John Henry Hinklin, 84, of S. Vine St., who died Tuesday in Wensthoff Memorial Hospital in Cocoa, Fla.
The body will arrive in Marion early Friday morning and may be viewed in the funeral home from 11 a.m. Friday until the time of the services. The Rev. Robert A. Byler, pastor of Epworth Methodist Church, will be in charge of the services. Burial will be in the Marion Cemetery.
Mr. Hinklin, a native of Marion County, was born May 28, 1874, in LaRue, a son of George and Amanda Hoover Hinklin. He was reared in that community and in 1895 was married to the former Maude Hill of Agosta, now New Bloomington. She died in 1918.
A sports enthusiast, Mr. Hinklin was a onetime semi-pro baseball player and held numerous titles and trophies for his trap shooting ability. At 72, he was still active in the Grand America World Championship trap shooting matches.
He was employed 42 years as a yard conductor for the Erie Railroad, retiring in 1948. Since then he had spent considerable time in Florida.
He had been in relatively good health in later life. Death was attributed to a cerebral hemmorhage suffered Saturday.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mildred Stonebraker of Huntington, Ind., Mrs. Pierce Barrett of San Jose, Calif., and Mrs. Nell Hudgins of River Edge, N.J.; six sons, Marion E. Hinklin of 578 S. Vine St., George Hinklin of 320 Eisenhower Ave., A. I. Hinklin of 594 Pearl St., Raymond Hinklin of 701 Windsor St., C. B. Hinklin of 597 Irey Ave., and Frank Hinklin of Toledo; a sister, Mrs. Paul Thomas of near Delaware, 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
Narrative
Note: Researching John Henry Hinklin and family
From John Henry Hinklin and Maude M. Hill, going back through their ancestry, all information (as of 4th Mar 2014) derived from the Clark Family Reunion website (hosted by Rootsweb/Ancestry.com), by Richard A. Clark II.
ADDENDUM: As of 17 Nov 2014, I've significantly amended the ancestry I had (from Richard Clark) for Maude Hill, as I have significant documentation that indicates he (and many others on Ancestry.com) have picked the wrong Maude Hill as the wife of John Henry Hinklin. I have not yet started the research to verify John Henry's ancestry, though I have begun more work on completing his descendancy. I have done significant work in establishing Maude Hill's ancestry.
SECOND ADDENDUM: His obituary states that he was survived by eleven grandchildren. So far, I can reliably account for eight of them, the firstborn of which, I believe, was my grandmother. The following list is in birth order of their parents, and not necessarily in birth order of the grandchildren.
daughter Mildred Ruth: Kathryn Claire (1) and Gene Anne (2)
daughter Helen Elizabeth: John (3) and Deirdre (4)
son Cornelius Buster: Kay (5)
son Raymond Delmore: Darrell (6), Carol Anne (7), and Karen Lynne (8)
Additionally, I have unconfirmed counts of three others from my father's memory (but without records found yet to verify): Bobby (son of Marion Hinklin), Susie (daughter of George Hinklin), and Doug (son of Adolphus "A.I." Hinklin).
Of the seven great-grandchildren (given as survivors in 1958), three of them are my father and two of his siblings, and another two are my father's first cousins; the remaining two, I suspect, were born to the children of John Henry's youngest son, Raymond Delmore, though that is only a guess at this point.
THIRD ADDENDUM: The only grandchild of A.I. Hinklin has contacted me to confirm her father's name as Doug, and his year of birth as 1949; he would have been among the eleven grandchildren counted at John Henry's death, bringing the confirmed count of grandchildren (at John Henry's death) to nine. This would leave Bobby (son of Marion Hinklin) and Susie (daughter of George Hinklin) as grandchildren whose birthdates I'd have to find in order to count them among the eleven surviving grandchildren.
