Narrative

Note: Researching Maude M. Hill

The dates I had originally for the birth and death of Maude M. (Hill) Hinklin were likely lifted from Richard Clark's website, as I had no sources listed and I know I had no other information from the Stonebraker research. The dates I had disagreed significantly (by a few years on each end) from those on her gravestone in the Marion Cemetery next to her husband, John Henry Hinklin. I've found the correct (and in agreement with the gravestone) death date and location in the Ohio Death Index; I've not yet found solid birth information as of yet. I have found the source which I believe is what Richard Clark may have had for her birth and ancestry - a birth record for a "Modda Hill" in Benton, Monroe Cty, Ohio, to parents Martha Daugherty and Simeon Hill on 17 Mar 1880. I think a more complete copy of her marriage record (which names her parents) or possibly her obituary would go a long way to solidifying her identity.

ADDENDUM: The marriage record for Maude Hill and John Henry Hinklin gives her year of birth as 1876, while the death record for her daughter Frances May Hinklin gives Maude's place of birth as Washington Court House, Fayette Cty, Ohio. Unless there is reason to doubt her statement of age on her marriage license (such as if she wanted to appear older, which seems unlikely given the time period), this would indicate that the Maude Hill from which I am descended - wife of John Henry Hinklin, mother of Mildred Ruth (Hinklin) Stonebraker, is not a daughter of Simeon Cornelius Hill Jr. and not a descendant of his lineage.

SECOND ADDENDUM: In looking for likely candidates for Maude Hill's parents, a Geni.com page indicated she was born in December of 1875. I've found a birth record for a Mallinda M. Hill, in Jasper Twp, Fayette Cty, Ohio, for 26 Dec 1875, with parents "Wm. F. Hill" and "Hannah E. Conger." On FindaGrave.com is listed a Marion Cty burial for Hannah Elizabeth (Cowger) Hill, widow of William F. Hill, with her obituary posted giving her surviving children, including a Mrs. John Hinklin of Marion, Ohio. I believe I've found the right match for Maude's ancestry, though I suspect that the name as listed in the index on FamilySearch is a mistranscription. I will have a number of corrections to make in the tree shortly.

THIRD ADDENDUM: Maude's obituary agrees (mostly) with the information I had thus far gathered for her from the records. Her obituary gives her place of birth as Washington Court House, while the indexed birth record gives it as neighboring Jasper Twp (both in Fayette Cty), and the obituary also gives her birthdate as one day earlier (25 Dec instead of 26 Dec). Likewise, her date of death in the obituary is given as "last night," making it 1 Mar, while the indexed death record gives it as 31 Mar.

I suspect that the location of her birth was Jasper Twp, and Washington Court House was just given as the closest sizable center of population in later years, and was assumed by her childred to be the actual birthplace. I also suspect the discrepancy in the dates is due to dates filed or recorded, or possible transcription errors in the indexing of the records, though I have not confirmed this.
