Monroe Thomas, 77, prominent Wells county farmer and former county commissioner in that county, died unexpectedly at his home two miles north of Markle at 4:15 p.m. Monday of a heart attack. He had been in failing health for some time but death was unexpected. Mr. Thomas had visited a son's home earlier in the day and was taken home after becoming ill.

Mr. Thomas was born March 15, 1870, in Union township, Wells couny, to Samson and Susan Caley Thomas, and his first marriage was to Mollie C. Kline who died July 6, 1909. He was married a second time September 7, 1920, to Flora Burnau, who survives.

Surviving also are four children, Von Thomas, near Markle; Lafe Thomas, near Roanoke, Keith Thomas, Lancaster township, and Mrs. Edna Fishbaugh, Rock Creek township, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A son, Fay, preceded him in death. A brother, Lewis S. Thomas, died last January.

Mr. Thomas for 17 years served the Farmers Mutual Insurance company, which has offices here, as director and solicitor. He was a member of the Markle Lodge, No. 453, F. & A.M., the Markle chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Scottish Rite bodies of Fort Wayne, and Mizpah Temple of the Shrine, Fort Wayne.
