Narrative
Note: Researching John Duckwall
The initial information I had on the parentage for John Duckwall stems from early web searches I had performed without adequate documentation or sourcing; the notes I have found so far from the files of Jane Anne Thomas do not have vital dates or parentage for him, though I have not completely reviewed her archived files and notes for this branch of the family as of yet.
John is mentioned in the Centennial History of Grant County, Indiana 1812-1912, in the biographical article on his grandson William L. Duckwall (son of Joseph F. Duckwall). That article gives John Duckwall as "a native Virginian, who came to Grant county in 1838... When John Duckwall... came to Indiana and to Van Buren township, it was a wilderness, pure and simple. Here he entered one hundred and sixty acres of land, and after clearing up a small place, sufficient to build a cabin upon, the family moved on the new place and there continued to reside."
The Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the War of 1812 gives that a John Duckwall served with his brother-in-law (his wife's brother), William "Billy" Hill Jr., in Capt. G.W. Barrere's Cavalry, from 30th Apr 1812 until 6th May 1813. (Incidentally, Billy was also married to John's older sister, Mary "Polly" Duckwall.)
Additionally, I found an archived Rootsweb post from 1999 by Marc Speelmon that contains a descendancy for George Frederick Duckwall Sr. This genealogy gives John as a grandson of George Sr. and a son of the Rev. Lewis Duckwall, and the vital dates line up with the information I have for John. The further family also matches up with the information in the Grant Cty history article mentioned above, as well as including his daughter Sarah Duckwall (my ancestor).
Interestingly, a great portion of the discussion on that archived 1999 thread from Rootsweb centers around the religion and denomination of the Duckwalls and associated family. John's father, Rev. Lewis Duckwall, was a United Brethren minister - making at least two UB ministers in my ancestry (counting Rev. David F. Thomas).
It should be noted that John (son of Lewis) had a first cousin John Duckwall who was born to George Frederick Duckwall Jr. in 1784, and who died in 1844.
ADDENDUM: There is an entry in the text The Duckwalls and Allied Families (p149) for Sarah's parents John Duckwall and Elizabeth Hill, and the list of children includes "Sally" (b. 17 Jan 1815) who married "Sam Caley," with their children named only as Frank, Steve, and Sam, with no additional information or details. The text also does not seem to indicate the parentage of John or Elizabeth, so it remains to be seen if our John Duckwall is a son of the Rev. Lewis Duckwall and his wife Susanna Crone. The text does list a John among the children of Lewis and Susanna, though it names his wife Mary Eakin; that list also includes Mary (Polly) Duckwall, wife of William Hill. I will need to do additional research to confirm that Sarah (Duckwall) Caley's father John was indeed the same John as was a son of Lewis and Susanna.
I will note that the vital dates for John on p149 match those on p3 of the text, so perhaps the naming of his wife on p3 is in error, or perhaps he married a second time after the very early death of his first wife.
