Narrative
Tintype photograph of the family of Samson Monroe Thomas. Based on the apparent ages of the boys, this photo is likely from around 1878. Seated, left to right:
Susanna Elizabeth (Caley) Thomas
Samson Monroe Thomas
James Allen "Allie" Rinehart Thomas
Standing, left to right:
Lewis S. Thomas
Sarah Magdalena "Maggie" Kohr (Susanna's daughter from her first marriage)
Dale Monroe Thomas
Taped to the back of the photo is a paper with notes written by Mary Alice (Bayha) Thomas; in them, she mistakenly lists Maggie's given name as Margaret.
Absent is Susanna's other child form her first marriage, Jacob Kohr; if my estimation of the date is correct, he would have been about fourteen or fifteen years old, and may likely have already struck out on his own to find work and a life elsewhere. In the notes from the files of Jane Anne Thomas (Samson's great-granddaughter), I've not found anything to suggest that there was any unnecessary amount of strain between Samson and his step-children (Maggie would remain living in his household until well into her twenties), though it is certainly possible.
