Event Note

Rose's birth place is determined from the dates given in the article for her parents' (George Rudkin and Emma Laxton) 50th wedding anniversary; they emigrated from England in 1883, and lived in Chicago for six years (until about 1889). Rose was born in 1884, so it seems highly likely she was born in Chicago.

Narrative

[Marriage announcement for Rose Rudkin and Richard M. Swinburne, from the Monroe County Democrat, 2 March 1900.]

MARRIED - In Sparta, Wisconsin, February 26, 1900, by Rev. William Crawford, D.D., at his residence, Mr. Richard M. Swinburne of Langdon, North Dakota, and Miss Rose E. Rudkin of New Lyme. Mr. T.I. Lawrence of Lafayette acted as groomsman, and Miss Annie E. Rudkin, a sister of the bride, as bridesmaid. Mr. and Mrs. Swinburne will visit among friends in this vicinity for a few weeks, and will then make their home at Langdon, North Dakota.

Narrative

Note: Rose Rudkin's first marriage

Family oral history tells that Rose was married to a Richard Swinburne, and after the birth of their son (Cevie), he abandoned her (and the baby) on the prairie. From there, she made her way back to her family in Wisconsin and went on to marry Ernest Thompson; Cevie was raised with the rest of their children. Richard went on to remarry, as well, having a number of children with his second wife.

According to available documents, Rose and Richard were married in February 1900, shortly before her sixteenth birthday. Sometime after the birth of Cevie, she returned to her family in Wisconsin; court documents (yet to be fully reviewed) seem to indicate that she went to visit her family and never returned to Richard, and the matter was brought to court with a number of depositions and letters presented as he sought remuneration from Rose's family or the restoration of his wife to him. The end result was a divorce granted sometime in late 1905 in Monroe County Court.
