John Ellis Rudkin was born on September 14, 1891 in the Town of New Lyme in Monroe County to George and Emma (Laxton) Rudkin. He grew up in the Cataract area. He married the former Mable Eshelman on December 24, 1919. They farmed in Trout Falls and the Cataract area. They moved to Sparta in June of 1974. Mable passed away December 23, 1987.

John was a member of the school and town boards. He was a lifetime member of the Modern Woodman Lodge.

He passed away Monday February 27, 1995 at St. Mary's Hospital at the age of 103 years, five months, and 13 days.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth, a granddaughter, two great-grandsons, a son-in-law, Harold Webster; his parents, six sisters; and four brothers.

He is survived by [living relatives]...

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 2, at the Lanham-Kann Funeral Home at 1:30 o.m. with Rev. James A. Rivers officiating. Mrs. Ruth Hering was the organist.

Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers; Honorary Roger Jones and George Christenson; Active - David Rudkin, Larry Rudkin, Paul Rudkin, Dale Rudkin, Joe Yourell, and David Yourell.

Narrative

Note: Possible twin brother of John Ellis Rudkin

In recent searches I had found an indexed birth record for a "Joseph Redkin" who was listed as the son of "George Wm. and Emma Redkin," with the same birthdate and birthplace given as John Ellis was known to have. Initially, I took this to be a previously-unknown twin brother of John's who had potentially died very young, but further review of the information at hand suggested this was also possibly simply an erroneous transcription into the index and that the record actually applied to John. The copy of his obituary I'd found online did not specifically list the surviving relatives (as it had been edited by the poster), but did list that he was preceded in death by four brothers. These four would be George William Jr. (d. 1963), infant death Henry (d. 1891), Arthur (d. 1973), and Dewey Eugene (d. 1979) - which leaves no unaccounted deceased brother, by my reckoning.

While it's possible that the presumed twin Joseph was counted among the survivors at John's death, this seems unlikely as no Joseph was listed in the Rudkin's household in the census records before the death of George William Sr. Additionally, I can find no birth record for John separate from the indexed record for Joseph. At this point, I think it more likely that the indexed record contains an error, and that the record should apply to John.
