Narrative

Note: Researching Lucille Smith

Lucille, the youngest known daughter of Jeremiah and Rebecca (DeWitt) Smith, was something of a mystery to me; initially, I had only the 1900 US Census record for Jeremiah's household, placing the fourteen-year-old "Celia" (likely a phonetic mistake from her commonly-used nickname of of "Ceal," with her given name often misspelled as "Luceal") with her parents and older brother Roy in Union Twp, Huntington Cty, Indiana.

In the "Smith" collection in the genealogy files of Jane Anne Thomas were photos in an envelope with notes for Fred Chaney and Lucille Smith, which was the first indication I had of a married name for my searches. I quickly found two marriage records for Lucille, each of which specifically named her parents as Jeremiah Smith and Rebecca DeWitt - the first in 1906 to Fred Ray Chaney. She and Fred can be found in the 1910 and 1920 US Censuses living with their daughter Woneta in Jackson Twp, Huntington Cty, Indiana.

Fred died in September 1930, and is buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Roanoke, Huntington Cty, Indiana; his obituary (from the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette) is posted to the FindaGrave.com website, and names his daughter as a survivor but does not mention his wife. The supplemental information in the listing indicates he was divorced, which aligns with the January 1930 marriage record for a Lucille Chaney to Clarence J. Robinette in Allen Cty, Indiana and which gives both Lucille and Clarence as previously married. Additionally, the 1930 US Census finds Clarence living in Fort Wayne, Allen Cty, Indiana with wife Lucille and step-daughter Woneta.

Clarence and Lucille apparently didn't remain married, either; Clarence died in 1952, and is buried in Jefferson Chapel Cemetery, Columbia City, Whitley Cty, Indiana (where his parents are buried). Lucille, meanwhile, is found in the 1940 US Census with the surname Chaney and living with James E. Mason in Fort Wayne, listed as his boarder.

Whether or not Lucille and James ever married is not a resolved question. The two appear to be buried with matching stones in Glenwood Cemetery in Roanoke (James died in 1960, Lucille in 1972), and Lucille's stone gives her name as Lucille K. Mason (with the listing on FindaGrave.com giving her maiden name as "Chaney"). Additionally, her brother George Henry Smith's obituary in 1959 names her "Mrs. Ceal Mason of Lima, Ohio." I have not found any marriage record for the two of them as of yet in either Indiana or Ohio. I find it equally possible that they married as well as that they may never have legally married and presented themselves as such after many years, or even became wed by commonlaw.
