Narrative
Note: Roy Clark Smith and family
Roy and his first wife, Kansas-born Hattie Elvira Haney, married in 1903; they would go on to have only three surviving children, daughters Viola Grace and Olive May, and son Dale Roy, all born before 1910. Both Roy and Hattie came from farming families resident in the rural parts of the county, but Roy's livelihood came as a car inspector for the Erie Railroad and the couple made their home in the city of Huntington, Huntington Cty, Indiana.
Hattie died sometime in 1924, and in Roy remarried in mid-1926 to Bertha Eddy. This seems to have scattered his children somewhat - his oldest daughter, Viola, appears to have eloped to Michigan to marry prior to her mother's death, already four months pregnant, but the younger two, Olive and Dale, were living in their father's home at least as late as 1920, and likely afterwards. At his marriage to Bertha, Olive and Dale would have been about eighteen and sixteen, and even as late as 1930 they would have been only in their early-to-mid twenties, but they aren't counted in Roy's household in the 1930 US census. I had initially wondered if they might have gone to live with grandparents after their mother's death and their father's remarriage, but this might not have been an option for them - both of their grandfathers were already deceased (Jeremiah Smith in 1920, Edward Haney in 1910), and while I can't confirm the whereabouts of their grandmother Melvina (Noe) Haney in 1930, their grandmother Rebecca (DeWitt) Smith was living with her oldest daughter Rosanna (Smith) Thomas (Olive and Dale's aunt, and my second-great-grandmother) when she died in 1926, and I've found no reference in any of the family history files to indicate that any of Roy's children lived there, as well.
Whether there was any conflict between Roy's children and his second wife is unknown at this time; while possible, following on the death of their mother, it's also equally likely based on my findings thus far that Olive and Dale had simply reached the age to strike out and start their own lives as young adults by the time of the 1930 US Census.
Olive married Kermit Funderburg in the late 1920s, and had four daughters. She and Kermit were counted in the 1930 and 1940 US Censuses as living with their children in Huntington, and spent their later years in Florida, though at least some of their children and grandchildren would remain in Indiana.
Dale married in 1938 to Evelyn Dush, and was counted in the 1940 US Census in the nearby city of Fort Wayne, Allen Cty, Indiana; he appears to have lived in Indiana until his death in 1978, and his obituary clipping from 1978 names no children as survivors or preceding him in death. (Evelyn's obituary does not mention any children, either.)
As previously mentioned, Viola (Roy's oldest daughter), had married in St. Joseph, Berrien Cty, Michigan in July 1923, with her mother's death coming sometime in the following year. Viola's first child, Violet Bernice, was born just over four months after the wedding, and would be followed over the next twenty years by at least six siblings. Viola, and many of her children and grandchildren, would go on to make their home in the greater Fort Wayne area.
