Narrative
Pictured are Lucille K. Smith (m. Chaney), left, with Rosetta Call (m. Trullender), right.
This photo was found in the "Smith" collection of the files of Jane Anne Thomas; in very old pencil, in handwriting I don't recognize, is written "Ceal Smith Rose Call." Lucille was nickname "Ceal" for short, and was living in Union Twp, Huntington Cty, Indiana, while "Rose" and her family had lived in the same township on the other side of the county line (Wells Cty). Rosetta married Albert Trullender in 1896 in Wells Cty, with her parents named as "John Call" and mother's maiden name "Dewitt."
Further research indicates that Rosetta was born in 1876, and her parents were Nancy DeWitt and John Call. Though I haven't completely verified this, I believe Nancy and Lucille's mother, Rebecca Ann (DeWitt) Smith, were second cousins - making the girls pictured third cousins. Based on the style of the photo and mount, and the girls' apparent ages, I believe this photo to be from between 1895 and 1900.
