Narrative

Note: Gertrude Notbohm, Louis and Emma Schoen

In the 1920 and 1930 US Census, living with Louis and wife Emma Schoen is a Gertrude Notbohm, b. ca 1919. In the 1920 census she is designated "niece," while in the 1930 census she is designated "lodger." I am uncertain at this point who her parents may be, or to which adult (Louis or Emma) is she a niece. In the 1940 US Census, after the death of Louis, Emma (age 55) is listed as the head of household, with Gertrude designated a "foster daughter."

As best as I am able to determine so far, Louis and Emma had no children of their own.

ADDENDUM: In the index listings on the Dodge-Jefferson Counties Genealogical Society, there is a marriage listing for Gertrude E. Notbohm and John W. Gaston; there is also a listing for John's death on 21 Aug 2001. John is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown, Jefferson Cty, Wisconsin, sharing a plot with Gertrude E. Gaston with no death date listed (on FindaGrave.com). The birthdate given is 2 Sep 1918, which would match up with her age (11) in the 1930 US Census listing for the household of Louis and Emma. Another website indicates she died in September 2006.

Gertrude's own obituary might help shed light on her family history - both that of her birth parents, and potentially that of Louis and Emma Schoen, answering the questions of whether they had adopted Gertrude, and if they ever had children of their own.

SECOND ADDENDUM: In the obituary for Louis Schoen in 1940, Gertrude Notbohm is described as his daughter, while in the obituary for Emma (Notbohm) Schoen she is named Mrs. John Gaston, and is described as a niece "who made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Schoen for many years."

Additionally, finally discovering Emma Schoen's maiden name (Notbohm) makes it relatively clear that Gertrude is the daughter of one of Emma's siblings.
