Narrative

[Obituary for Mrs. Charles Schoen, from the Oconomowoc Enterprise, 12 Oct 1923.]

The death of Mrs. Charles Schoen occurred early Saturday morning, Oct. 6, at her home on Milwaukee street, aged 83 years. This is the second time within but a few weeks that the Grim Reaper has taken toll from this family circle, the death of Leonard Schoen son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schoen having occurred on July 14, 1923.

Mrs. Schoen whose maiden name was Miss Louisa Backus, was born March 9, eighty three years ago in Germany and came with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Backus, to America locating in the town of Ixonia which was the family home for many years.

Fifty nine years ago on July 16, she was married to Charles Schoen and they resided on the Schoen farm in Ixonia until removing to this city which has been their home for about thirty one years.

Mrs. Schoen is survived by her husband, and six sons and three daughters: William of Milwaukee; Charles of Madison; Edward of Fort Atkinson; Otto and Joseph of Rockford, Ill.; Louis Schoen, Mrs. Frank Hoeft and the Misses Laura and Emma Schoen of Oconomowoc. She also leaves one sister and three brothers: Mrs. Fredericka Timmel of this city; William Backus of Madison; Fred Backus of Los Angeles and Louis Backus of Fort Atkinson.

Mrs. Schoen had enjoyed the respect and esteem of the entire community during her long residence here and was one of its most honored members. Ever devoted to her home and family her loss will be keenly felt in the family group. She was a member of St. Matthews's Ev. Lutheran congregation and was a most earnest and thorough Christian.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Schoen home, thence to St. Matthew's chapel on West avenue with interment in the family burial plot in La Belle cemetery. Rev. W.P. Hass officiated.

The six sons acted as their mother's pallbearers.
