Narrative

Note: Researching the family of William Schoen, son of Charles F. Schoen Sr.

The records for William Schoen (son of Charles Schoen Sr., not to be confused with his first cousin William Schoen, son of John Schoen) have proven somewhat confusing to sort out, particular with the convergence of similar names (some relations of his, some not) and mispellings.

First, establishing the names and identities of William and his wife falls to the marriage record for Wilhelm Friedrich Karl Schoen on 8 Feb 1889 to Henriette Anna Wilhelmine Peters in Waukesha Cty, Wisconsin. Wilhelm's parents in the record are named as Karl Schoen and Louis Nabel Backhaus; these are Charles Sr. and Louisa (Backhaus) Schoen, as named in Charles Sr.'s obituary, where William (of Milwaukee) is named as a surviving son.

After their marriage, the US Census records for William's household from 1900 to 1940 reads as such.
1900 - William (head, age 35), Henrietta (wife, age 33), Elvera (daughter, age 9), Henrietta (daughter, age 2)
in Fort Atkinson, Jefferson Cty, Wisconsin
1910 - William (head, age 44) Henrietta (wife, age 42), Alvira (daughter, age 18), Henrietta (daughter, age 11)
in Fort Atkinson, Jefferson Cty, Wisconsin
1920 - William (head, age 53), Ella (wife, age 46), Elbera (daughter, age 27), Henrieta (daughter, age 21)
in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Cty, Wisconsin (with two servants, two boarders)
1930 - William (head, age 64), Ella (wife, age 58)
in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Cty, Wisconsin (with one boarder)
1940 - William (widowed FIL, age 74)
with Carleton family: Guy (head, age 47), Vera (wife, age 48), Floyd (son, age 22), Carolyn (mother, age 74)
in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Cty, Wisconsin

The inconsistency in the age difference between William and his wife, along with the shifting name, offered some confusion; I had mistaken a different burial listing for William's wife, Henrietta, and initially took the vital dates from that, believing William was a young widower who remarried after 1910. The birth record for a female Schoen child which I believe to be Alvera (on 17 May 1891 in Oconomowoc, Waukesha Cty, Wisconsin), which names the parents as Wm. Schoen and Ella Peters, brought me to the possibility that Ella and Henrietta were the same person, and that Ella was a nickname (possibly derived from Wilhelmine). This indicates that William and Ella were married from 1889 until her death sometime after 1930. I have not yet identified a reliable burial location for Ella, as FindaGrave.com does not list a likely candidate for her. There is a William Schoen listed in La Belle Cemetery in Oconomowoc, not far from where his father and many siblings are buried, so a physical review of the gravestones there may allow Ella to be found.

At this point I believe that William and Ella had only two daughters - Alvera (called Vera as an adult), and Henrietta. I have found residence information for Vera for 1930, and believe she married sometime in her late thirties or early forties, having a step-son but no children of her own. Vera and husband Guy are also buried in La Belle Cemetery.

I have not determined what happened to Henrietta after 1920 as of yet. In 1920 there are two US Census listings for a Wisconsin-born Henrietta Schoen, age twenty-one, in Milwaukee. The first is mentioned above (in her father's household), while the second is in a different census ward and has her listed with dozens of others, mostly in their twenties. I haven't found a potential listing for her in the 1930 US Census, but in the 1940 US Census there is a listing for a single, forty-one-year-old, Wisconsin-born Henrietta Schoen in Chicago, Cook Cty, Illinois, working as a nurse in the US Marine Hospital in the employee of US Public Health Services. On that listing, her previous residence (as of 1935) was given as Seattle, King Cty, Washington. I have found no further information for Henrietta after that point, nor have I located a potential burial site for her. I do not know if she ever married, but if she were unmarried by age forty-one, I would suspect that she never had children, at the least.

ADDENDUM: I should still note that it is possible that William was married twice, and that his wives shared similar names; the age difference between William and his wife was consistently two years through the 1910 US Census listing, while it was six or seven years in the 1920 and 1930 US Census records. Coincidentally, this is when she started being reported as named "Ella" in the census listings. There is a Henrietta Schoen buried in La Belle Cemetery in Oconomowoc, Waukesha Cty, Wisconsin, b. 1867 d. 1913; I do not know the family identity of this woman, but have entertained the possibility that this is William's first wife, and that between her death and the 1920 US Census for his household in Milwaukee, he may have remarried. Specifically identifying this grave, or finding death records or any other marriage record for William, would help in this search.

SECOND ADDENDUM: We walked La Belle Cemetery today, and found both the group of plots for Charles Schoen Sr. and his family as well as the Peters family plots.

Henrietta A. Schoen is buried with her siblings and parents in the Peters family section of plots, behind her parents Henry M. and Augusta L. Peters (which matches the parents' names in the marriage record for William and Henrietta) and in a line with brother Dr. Henry A. Peters and his wife and Minnie Bremer Witt (her relation to the Peters unknown). This would indicate a strong likelihood that Henrietta, wife of William Schoen, did indeed die after the 1910 US Census (in 1913, according to the burial in La Belle Cemetery), and in the years between her death and the 1920 US Census William remarried (to Ella) and moved to Milwaukee.

As for the birth record for daughter Alvera, which names the mother Ella Peters, there is no image of the record available on FamilySearch.org; while it's possible that his first wife was also nicknamed "Ella," I think it just as likely that this is a transcription error, and the record may actually read "Etta."

I have still not located information on William's second marriage, nor do I have vital dates for his wife, information on her death, or knowledge of her burial site. It's possible they divorced, but I think it more likely that William was twice a widower by the time of the 1940 US Census.
