Narrative

Note: Willie Stargard

May have been an infant or child death; I have found no record of him, and only have family oral history to suggest that there was such a child born to Julius and Mathilda (Wendt) Stargard. Carolyn (Stargard) Nagel, granddaughter of Julius and Mathilda, believes Willie is buried in La Belle Cemetery in Oconomowoc, Waukesha Cty, Wisconsin.

ADDENDUM: The only mention I have found thus far of another son of Julius and Mathilda (Wendt) Stargard was in Viola Stargard's obituary from 1976, which names Herbert as a surviving sibling and says Viola was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. The sisters were obviously Lydia and Esther, who died in 1920 and 1950, respectively. The brother is presumed at this point to be Willie.

SECOND ADDENDUM: Carolyn (Stargard) Nagel showed us the location of Willie's grave in La Belle Cemetery in Oconomowoc, Waukesha Cty, Wisconsin, and we've made some attempts at a rubbing. The stone is highly eroded, facing up a hill with some western exposure. The top of the stone clearly reads "Willie H." The face rubbings allow us to read the name "Stargard" at the top of the face, while the dates and inscription are very difficult to make out even in the rubbings. It does appear to give dates in August of 1890, though it is possible that the year actually reads 1899. This at least gives me a starting point for newspaper research.

THIRD ADDENDUM: While there was no notice found in the "Man About Town" local news section of the Wisconsin Free Press in any of the issues in the month of August or early September 1890, Patricia Borgman found a reference in the records of Saint Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church (of Oconomowoc, Waukesha Cty, Wisconsin) to Wilhelm Heinrich Stargard, son of Julius and Mathilda (Wendt) Stargard. The church record notes his death on 22 Aug 1890, with his funeral (and presumably burial) on 24 Aug 1890. She also noted that no baptismal record existed for this child dating back as far as 1880, though she would likely have been unaware that Julius and Mathilda had only married in mid-November 1889. It seems likely to me, assuming "Willie" wasn't conceived prior to their marriage, that he may well have been somewhat premature and was likely either stillborn or died shortly after birth. With that in mind, I've given him the same birth and death date in my files with the notes here to accompany his record should some other information for his birth ever arise.
