Narrative
Note: The immigration of Wilhelm Wendt and family
The passenger manifest for the ship Baltimore, which arrived in New York on 26th Apr 1869, contains the following in the list:
Wilhm. Wendt 33 Prussia
Ottilie Wendt 26 Prussia
August Wendt 6 Prussia
Bertha Wendt 4 Prussia
Minna Wendt 1 Prussia
This arrival date is after the death date I have for Fritre Minna (10 Mar 1869), and she is not counted among the household's 1870 Census record in Watertown, Jefferson Cty, Wisconsin. This suggests she either died en route or shortly after their arrival in the United States. I have not located a death record or burial site for Minna.
It should be noted that Ottilie was pregnant with Augusta (their first American-born child) during the voyage.

[headline] PROVED AN UTTER FAILURE.
[2nd headline] The First Case Under the Bennett Law Thrown Out of Court
JEFFERSON, Wis., May 21.- The first gun fired for the Bennett law proved to be loaded with a blank cartridge. Yesterday, William Wendt, Charles Moods and wife and Fred Keller, all of the town of Sullivan, were brought eleven miles to this place to be tried before Justice Krebs on a charge of violating the school laws in relation to sending their children to what the Bennett law classifies as a school. District Attorney W.H Rogers appeared for the prosecution by request of the school board which made the complaint, and George Grimm conducted the defense, and had the case thrown out of court on the ground that the board had not complied with the law in that it had not properly fixed the time for attendance; and not published or posted proper notices; had not served notice on the defendants, as required by the act, and was in other matters in default. It was also further shown that there is sufficient time left in the year to complete with the law.
A great deal of interest was manifested in the case, and three Lutheran ministers were present to show their sympathy for Wendt, who is a member of the Lutheran church. The other defendants are Catholics.
After the trial was over the members of the school board were the subject of a great deal of good-natured bantering because of their failure to make a case on account of their own neglect.
