Narrative
Augusta (Schoen) Stargard
Augusta Louisa Dorothea Schön (spelled "Schoen" when anglicized) was born 6th Apr 1836 in Prussia; her family is believed to have come from the Lackendorf district of Elbing, East Prussia (an area now held by modern-day Poland). She came to America in 1844, on the ship Mary Phillips, with her parents, an older sister Wilhelmina, and a baby brother (Carl, called "Charles" or "Chas" when he was older). It's not known if she had other siblings who either hadn't survived or hadn't come with the family when they left their homeland, but she was the second oldest of the three who made the voyage with their parents; her youngest brother, Johann (called "John"), was seemingly born during the voyage. (The only record of Wilhelmina is the passenger manifest of the ship on which they journeyed; her fate after that is unknown.)
While the records haven't been found to confirm, family memories noted in obituaries for Augusta and her siblings indicate that the family lived in New York state, in the Buffalo, Erie Cty area, for several years before moving to Wisconsin. How long they stayed in Buffalo is uncertain, but by 1849 the Schoen family had settled on a farm in Ixonia, Jefferson Cty, Wisconsin. There they built their life with the other Prussian and German immigrant families that made up a large portion of the communities around them - working their farm and attending Lutheran services and classes (including being founding members of Cross Lutheran Church in Ixonia).
It's assumed that the teenaged Augusta played a large part in helping build her family's new American life. When she married is uncertain, but by 1860 she was a married mother, wedded to Prussian-born farmer Carl Stargard. The couple would continue to work and live on their farm in Ixonia over the coming years, adding to their family and raising a total of four daughters and two sons.
By the time of her husband's death in 1903, five of the six children had married, leaving youngest son Carl at home; after husband Carl's death, Augusta appears to have moved briefly to Oconomowoc, in what appears to be an effort to help son Carl settle into a home in the city (where he would remain until his death in 1920). Augusta then returned to Ixonia, where she would remain until her death in 1913.
Augusta was buried in the church cemetery at Cross Lutheran in Ixonia, in the plot next to her husband Carl, with a shared monument over them; one side is inscribed "Vater und Mutter." Two plots closer to the church, in the same row, is buried her mother, and a few rows forward are buried both her youngest son Carl and her youngest brother, John, along with her three nephews by John. At the time of her death, she was survived by all six of her children, and thirteen living grandchildren.
Narrative
[Obituary for "Mrs. Charles Stargard" from the Oconomowoc Enterprise, 10 Oct 1913.]
Mrs. Charles Stargard passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 9, at her home in the town of Ixonia, aged 77 years.
Mrs. Stargard, whose maiden name was Augusta Schoen, was born in Germany, coming with her parents to America seventy years ago. The family resided for nine years at Buffalo, N.Y., then moving to Wisconsin, and settling in the town of Ixonia. There she was married to Charles Stargard, who preceded her in death several years. Mrs. Stargard is survived by six children: Mrs. Fred Brede, Mrs. George Sennhenn of Columbus, Mrs. Kitzrow and Julius Stargard of Oconomowoc; Mrs. Weber and Charles Stargard at the home in Ixonia. Mrs. Stargard also leaves two brothers, Charles Schoen of this city and John Schoen of Ixonia.
The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Lutheran church at Ixonia, with interment in the church yard. Rev. George Beckham, pastor of the church, will officiate.
