Louis J. Cayot, 85, died Tuesday at his home in Jefferson Township. Survivors include his wife, Pearl; three sons, Roy, Clarence, and Clifford; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Hazel Gerardot; two step-sisters, Mrs. Rose Crane and Mrs. Mary Savieo; 15 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.

Note: Establishing Louis Joseph Cayot's birthdate

Louis Joseph's year of birth is in some question, as it is reported differently (often by him) in various records; when the date itself is given, it is always November 18, so it seems reasonable to assume that the date is correct.

 

- The 1880 US Census reports his age as 3; assuming a birthdate of 18 Nov, that would be 1876.
- The 1900 US Census reports his age as 24 (1875).
- The 1910 US Census reports his age as 32 (1877).
- His WWI draft registration card gives his birth year as 1877.
- The 1920 US Census reports his age as 43 (1876).
- The 1930 US Census reports his age as 51 (1878).
- His marriage in 1931 (to Mary Etta Schultz, b.1892, d.1933) lists his birth year as 1878.
- His WWII draft registration card gives his birth year as 1880.
- His marriage in 1947 (to Lela Pearl Fetters, b.1894, d.1978) lists his birth year as 1882.
- His obituary gives his age (in April of 1962) as 85, making his year of birth 1876.
- His gravestone gives his birth year as 1876.

Narrative

Note: The marriages of Louis Joseph Cayot

Louis married first to Beatrice Middleton, the Indiana-born daughter of English-born Thomas Henry Middleton, in 1900; they would remain married until her death in 1921, and had three sons.

The next record I can find for Louis places him in the household of his oldest son, Roy Joseph Cayot, in 1930, and shortly after in 1931 Louis married mary Mary Etta (Vaughn) Schultz. Their marriage record gives Louis as married once before (ending in the death of his wife in 1921) and Etta as married twice previously (widowed in 1921 and 1927). Etta's death came in 1933; like his first wife Beatrice, her death would be at the age of forty-one.

(The step-daughter mentioned in Louis' obituary, Mrs. Hazel Gerardot, was born Thelma Hazel Beck in Illinois in 1920; her obituary from 2010 gives her mother as the late Etta (Vaughn) Beck. This, combined with the name on Etta and Louis' marriage record, gives us at least two of her marriages prior to Louis. Also interesting is that Hazel's obituary mentions only one sibling, a sister named Helen Eikleberry who preceded her in death. Whether this was a full sibling or a half-sister is not known at this time, though the lack of any mention of Helen in Louis' obituary would suggest that either Helen died before Louis or, more likely, was an older sibling of Hazel's and never lived with Louis as a step-father. Hazel would have been about eleven when her mother and Louis married, and she likely lived with him for at least a year or two, and possibly longer if she stayed after her mother's death.)

His third marriage was to Lela Pearl Fetters in 1947; their marriage record gives each of them as married twice before, with both of his ending in the death of his wives in 1921 and 1933, and hers ending in divorces in 1927 and 1941. They would remain married until his death in 1962, as his widow Pearl is named as surviving him. Pearl appears not to have remarried after Louis' death; she is not believed to have had any children from either of her first two marriages.
