Narrative

Note: Researching Beatrice Middleton

The entry in the Indiana Death Index for Beatrice Cayot gives her year of birth as 1880, as does her gravestone; her entry in the listing for her parents' household in the 1900 US Census gives her birthdate as Apr 1878.

There are two daughters listed in her parents' household in the 1880 US Census - Amelia, age "0" and Lydia, age 2 - who may or may not be Beatrice.

ADDENDUM: There are marriage records for Lydia Middleton in Allen Cty, Indiana - first to Richard Etts in 1898, and later as a widow to Frank Fox in 1909. This would suggest that Lydia was born in 1878, and that my ancestor Beatrice is the child named "Amelia" in the 1880 US Census. This would further suggest that the birthdate given for her in that 1900 US Census listing is incorrect. (My speculation is that her father would likely have been the one responding to the census taker, and mixed up Beatrice's birthday with Lydia's as he detailed his family for the listing.) I've since corrected the birthdate I have to read 1880.

As for her name, I've not yet found confirmation of her full birth name, but I suspect it may well have been Beatrice Amelia Middleton. As an infant in 1880, perhaps her parents hadn't yet decided by which name she would be called, while the questions was well and truly settled by the time she was a young woman in 1900.
