Note: Researching Clifford Cayot

Clifford's history is a little difficult to determine; after his presence in his father's household in the 1920 US Census in Jefferson Twp, Allen Cty, Indiana, he's next found in a 1930 US Census listing in Davenport, Scott Cty, Iowa, with a woman of the same age (22) named Darlene and listed as his wife. (Also with them are three lodgers who appear unrelated.) Whether Clifford and Darlene were actually married at this point is uncertain, as the indexed marriage record from Allen Cty, Indiana gives a date of 19 May 1934 for their wedding.

I can find no listing for either of them so far in the 1940 US Census, but in 1946 in Jefferson Cty, Alabama, Darlene was found (with her maiden name) as marrying Paul Allen Herring. This would suggest that, whatever else their history may have been, Darlene and Clifford must have divorced sometime between 1934 and 1946.

The FindaGrave.com website does not give burial information for Clifford on his listing, but does highlight the details of his obituary (from the Tri-City Herald, Kennewick, Benton Cty, Washington) - that he moved to Pasco, Franklin Cty, Washington in September of 1968, and died there 17 Feb 1969. The only family members named appear to be his brothers Clarence and Roy; this further supports the notion that he and Darlene had divorced, and that they likely had no surviving children, and possibly no children at all.

Conversely, Darlene's US Social Security Death Index record (from October 1991) gives her maiden name, indicating that she may well have been divorced from Paul Herring, as well. The FindaGrave.com website lists her as buried in Lindenwood Cemetery in Fort Wayne, Allen Cty, Indiana; her indexed obituary on the GenealogyBank.com website lists only a sister-in-law (Ruth Yohn) as family, which also suggests there were no surviving children born to Darlene and Clifford.
