Narrative
[Footnote article on George W. Coleman, from A Brief History of Bishop Jacob Mast and Other Mast Pioneers, pp658-659.]
George W. Coleman was born at Elverson, Pa., formerly called Springfield. Fifty years ago the name, Coleman, was very familiar through Chester and adjoining counties, especially in Elverson, where a number of Colemans were engaged in tailoring in 1837. When young George W. was seven years old he moved with his parents to Champaign Co., O. After having received a good common school education of that day he entered the Ohio Wesleyan University, situated in Delaware, O. In 1859 he joined the Lutheran Illinois Conference of the M.E. Church. After the death of his first wife, which was on Oct. 1, 1861, he enlisted in the arm as 1st Sergeant, Company A, 63rd Illinois Volunteers Infantry, and was discharged on account of physical disability in July, 1862. He then remarried in 1863 and in the spring of 1866 he entered Holston Conference of the M.E. Church, located in the South, where he preached until the fall of 1886, filling nearly all of the important appointments in the conference, viz., one of the churches in Knoxville, Tenn., from 1870 to 1872, Kingston Station, Athen circuit, Loudan Station, Rockwood Station, and a church in Chattanooga, Tenn. In 1886 he was transferred to South Kansas Conference, where he filled Sedan and Moline stations in Chataqua Co., Kans., from 1886-1889. He then transferred back to Holston Conference again and stationed at Cleveland, Tenn., afterwards at Johnson City, Narriman, Jellico, Dayton, Newport and Spring City, all in Tennessee.
In 1902 he retired from active ministry and in May, 1903, moved to Cleveland, Tenn., and purchased a home on Central Avenue, where he expects to spend the remainder of his life, having been a minister of the Gospel for fifty years, and also superintendent of public schools. His career has been marked with much activity and success.
