Narrative

Note: Researching the family of Ida Frances Simon

Tracing the history of Ida, her husband Oscar, and their daughter Ruth has been somewhat challenging. The earliest record I have yet found for Ida is the 1900 US Census, placing her in her parents' household as a fifteen-year-old girl. The next record is a listing for her as a servant in a household in Seattle, King Cty, Washington, in the 1910 US Census; at this time, her age was given as twenty-five and her marital status as single.

By the time of the 1920 US Census, though, she was listed as the wife of Oscar Evans, living with him and a five-year-old Washington-born Ruth Evans, listed as their daughter, in Seattle. I have found no birth record that I can confirm as Ruth's as of yet, and the only marriage record I have found for Oscar and Ida is from 1922, in Pierce Cty, Washington. I will note that on Oscar's WWI draft registration card (completed in Seattle on 12 Sep 1918), he listed "Ida Simon Evans" as his closest relative.

I have only been able to find subsequent census records for Oscar and Ida in the 1930 US Census, when Oscar and daughter Ruth (now with her age given as fifteen, and her birthplace as Minnesota) were counted living in Meadow Point, King Cty, Washington. Ida, though, was at that time listed as an inmate in the Northern State Hospital for the Insane in Sedro-Woolley, Skagit Cty, Washington. Oscar died a handful of years later in 1935, and so was not counted in the 1940 US Census; Ida was still alive, and was still listed as a patient in the Northern State Hospital. The next record I have been able to find for her was her death record from 1944 at Fort Steilacoom Insane Asylum (later known as the Western State Hospital) in Lakewood, Pierce Cty, Washington. That death record notes that Ida suffered from "manic depressive pyschosis," and it appears possible that she spent most or all of her life after 1920 as a committed patient.

Tracing Oscar's history has been somewhat difficult, as well. On his death record, Ruth reported his birthplace as South Dakota, and did not appear to know his parents' names at all. Oscar, though, consistently reported his birthplace as Minnesota. He had been married in 1899 in South Dakota to the Welsh-born Jane "Jennie" Owens, and the two of them had three sons (Matthew, Harold, and Donald) by 1904. Oscar and Jennie stil appear to have been married as of the 1905 South Dakota State Census, but by the 1910 US Census, Jennie was listed as a divorced servant, living with her three young sons in a household in York, Day Cty, South Dakota. I have not been able to find Oscar's 1910 listing, but again, by the time of the draft for WWI, he was living in Seattle and was naming Ida as his wife.

I am uncertain as to the actual marital history of Oscar and Ida at this point, as the only marriage record I have found is four years after that aforementioned WWI draft card. Because of this, I can only speculate as to whether the two of them were in a relationship and unmarried for several years, or whether they had married earlier, divorced, and remarried in 1922. Likewise, Ruth's actual parentage is potentially questionable, because I have not found a birth record for her and because of the uncertainty surrounding the marital history of her parents.

I also do not know whether Oscar maintained any contact with his sons after his divorce from Jennie, nor whether Ruth ever knew her half-brothers. Ruth married only six months' prior to her father's death, and her children were all born after his passing. It is entirely possible that Ruth's children did not know either of their maternal grandparents, as I do not know whether Ruth maintained contact with her mother Ida through the years, or how much of Ida's life was spent institutionalized.
