Narrative

Note: the birthplace and place of death of Oscar August Simon

I have not confirmed Oscar's birthplace, because it was reported variously as Wisconsin or Nebraska in the records throughout his lifetime.

- In the 1900 and 1910 US Census listings for his parents' household, his birthplace was reported as Nebraska.
- On his World War I draft registration card, Oscar reported his birthplace as Hustisford, Dodge Cty, Wisconsin, the same as his older sister Josephine.
- In the 1920 US Census, his birthplace was reported as Wisconsin.
- In the 1930 and 1940 US Census listings for his household, Oscar reported his birthplace as Nebraska.
- On his 1942 World War II draft registration card, he reported his birthplace as Pilger, Stanton Cty, Nebraska.

All his other siblings who were also born in the 1890s have generally also had their birthplaces reported as Nebraska - suggesting the family settled there after the birth of Josephine, but relocated to Minnesota prior to 1900. Additionally, Nebraska would have been more sparsely settled and would have less infrastructure for record-keeping as compared to Wisconsin, and the lack of a birth record for him from Wisconsin (while his older sister Josephine has a readily-found birth record from Dodge Cty, Wisconsin) suggests to me that he was indeed born in Nebraska.

I have not yet found a record for Oscar that details his place of death, but his US Social Security Death Index record gives his last place of residence as Virginia; the listing for him on the FindaGrave.com website gives his place of death as Alexandria, Virginia. HIs wife's death record, from nearly eleven years later, gives her place of death as Annandale, Fairfax Cty, Virginia, making it likely that Oscar died in that region of Virginia, as well.
