Narrative

[Excerpt from Christian Metzger: Founder of an American Family 1682-1942, p186.]

The HON. HENRY WEIBLE was a leading citizen of Delphos, and Van Wert County, Ohio. He was reared on the Nancy Metzger Weible homestead farm, near Dover. At age 17 he was apprenticed to the blacksmith trade. He worked assiduously at his trade, in various towns, and at Van Wert, among them, where he met Mary Will, daughter of Peter and Nancy (Gilliland) Will, who had come from Hagerstown, Maryland. Henry Weible and Mary Will were united in marriage in 1849. Shortly after the marriage he seettled in Delphos, permanently. He retired from blacksmithing in 1871. In 1876 he entered a partnership for the manufacture of handles, neck-yokes, and single-trees, and at the same time had charge of the Delphos Foundry and Machine Shop. Thus he switched from hand-craft to the industrial age.

During the next decade he associated his son George C. Weible with him in business, and branched out into the dry goods business at Dupont, into several stave factories - one in Georgia, another in Tennessee.

Few enterprises were inaugrated in Delphos that Henry Weible was not connected with. He was one of the incorporators of the Delphos Woolen Mills, and of the Delphos Flouring Mills. He was one of the organizers of the Toledo, Saint Louis and Kansas City Railroad; of the Pittsburg, Akron and Western Railroad, and of the Chicago and Burlington Railroad, and was a heavy stockholder in each of these.

In local politics and government he was active; for instance, he served as Justice of the Peace continuously for forty-one years. In 1863 he was elected County Commissioner of Van Wert County, service three years. In 1871 he was elected to the Ohio State Legislature, serving four years. In 1882 he was elected to the Ohio Board of Public Works, serving three years. He also served on the Delphos City Council. And on Delphos School Board he sat twenty-two years.
