Narrative

Note: Daniel Weibel

Daniel is noted in the text Christian Metzger: Founder of an American Family 1682-1942 in his mother's descendancy with an entry on p183, which gives not vital dates or information for him beyond naming his wife (Catherine Palmer) and noting that he "resided also at Dover, Illinois." No further information was given for his family, and none of his children are named in the entry.

After being counted as a young man in the household of his older sister Mary in the 1850 US Census in York Twp, Tuscarawas Cty, Ohio, Daniel married Catherine Palmer in 1853 in Tuscarawas Cty, Ohio. After the birth of some of their first children, I believe Daniel enlisted in an Ohio regiment of the Union Army during the Civil War; later pension records indicate he was a veteran, though I have not researched the details. The gap of several years between the birth of his son John (1858) and his daughter Sarah (1864) suggest he may have been quite some time in military life, but this is speculation on my part.

After the war and between the births of daughter Sarah (1864) and son George (1867), the family moved to Bureau Cty, Illinois, where many other Weible and Weible-related families had relocated, and his household was counted in Berlin Twp, Bureau Cty in the 1870 US Census. After a short handful of years here, Catherine died in late 1874, and a few years later he remarried in Allen Cty, Indiana to Laura Amanda Clarissa Thomas, a much younger unmarried woman introduced to him by his older sister Anne (Weible) Thomas, wife of Rev. David F. Thomas of Union Twp, Wells Cty, Indiana. (See the notes on his second wife, Laura, for details on correcting my research on her.) Daniel and Laura had one son, Alfred Tennyson Weibel, in 1879, and Daniel died in 1890, when his youngest son was about eleven years old.

Of his two marriages and six known children, Daniel has ended up with very little known descendancy. Looking through his known children in birth order:

- Mary appears to have died as a young girl; though her age at death is unconfirmed, she appears to have been less than ten years old at the time.

- Susan married Archelaus Lodge Williamson, but appears to have died childless after only four years of marriage at the age of twenty-eight.

- John died at age sixteen.

- I have not found any information for daughter Sarah after the 1880 US Census, when she was about sixteen years old; I do not know if she survived to adulthood, married, or had any children.

- George died at age twenty-five, though I have not found any information to determine if he married or had any children prior to his death.

- Alfred, Daniel's youngest and the only surviving child from his second marriage, died at the age of fifty, apparently divorced but a father of three (two daughters and one son) and a grandfather of at least six before his death (with at least three more following afterwards).

It should be noted that at some point in his adult life, Daniel began spelling his surname as "Weibel," rather than the more common "Weible" used by the bulk of his siblings and extended family. His known children and grandchildren all appear to have kept his chosen spelling.
