Narrative
Note: Researching Magdalena Weible
Finding records and connections pertaining to Magdalena has been somewhat difficult owing mostly to her late marriage, her nickname, and her absence from some of the pertinent households in the US Census records over the years. I believe I have found as much as I can in my initial searches, and that the ultimate determination I've made as to her fate is correct.
The 1850 US Census record for her parents' household in York Twp, Tuscarawas Cty, Ohio is highly faded and difficult to read, but the third entry in his household listing does appear to be a name that looks like "Magdalena," age nineteen. She appears clearly named in both the 1860 and 1870 Census records with her parents, age given as thirty-one and thirty-six, respectively - the first in Dover Twp, Tuscarawas Cty, the second in Van Wert, Van Wert Cty, Ohio.
There is a marriage record for a George H. Salter and Magdalene Weible on 11 Sep 1877 in Van Wert Cty, with no additional information given for the pair, but as her parents and other family were living in that area at the time I believe this record applies to her. Further research into George shows that he had married Philena Bump in 1854, and was recorded in the 1860 and 1870 US Census with Philena and their children in Union Twp, Wells Cty, Indiana. Philena died in 1874, a few years prior to the marriage that is presumed to be his and Magdalena's, and left George a widower with children ranging from teenagers down to a five-year-old.
While Van Wert and Union Twp are not exactly next door, there is only one county between the two locations and they sit barely forty miles apart. Additionally, Union Twp was home to some of Magdalena's first cousins - specifically her double-first cousins by her aunt Anna (Weible) Thomas and uncle, the Rev. David F. Thomas, my fourth-great-grandparents. I would find it quite possible that word of a middle-aged widower with children was passed through extended family to Magdalena and her parents, possibly starting from parishioners of the United Brethren congregation with which David was associated. The Salters themselves may even have attended that church.
For some reason, Magdalena is absent from the 1880 US Census listing for George's household in Union Twp, though his status is given as married. I have not found her as of yet in either Wells Cty or Van Wert Cty as of 1880, though I have not yet performed an exhaustive search of the visual records yet. George died in 1895.
In the 1900 US Census, there is an Ohio-born "Magalena Salters" in Union Twp as a widowed sixty-nine-year-old boarder in the household of Alex and Delila Firl or Fearl (or similar). In the 1910 US Census, "Maggie Salter," seventy-nine-year-old widow born in Ohio, is listed as the stepmother in the household of Mary (Salter) Walker in nearby Lafayette Twp, Allen Cty, Indiana. Following that is a death record from early 1911 for "Magdalina Salter" in Lafayette Twp, Allen Cty.
George, his first wife Philena, and "Maggie" are all three buried with a shared monument in Hoverstock Cemetery, Zanesville, Wells Cty. The monument also carries the inscriptions for five of George and Philena's children - four of them infant deaths and one of them a young boy. As best I can determine, Magdalena had no children of her own, as she was unmarried until she was forty-six.
