Narrative
Note: Researching Laura Amanda Clarissa Thomas
In the notes I had from Jane Anne Thomas, Laura was not given a full name, but was listed as simply "Laura Thomas" or occasionally "Laura A.C. Thomas." Jane Anne had noted that Laura and her sister Anne Marie Elizabeth Thomas were twins, and had recorded their birthdate. She had also listed Laura as marrying Ohio-born John Allen Ketrow in Lancaster Twp, Wells Cty, Indiana, in 1881, a location not far from where Laura had been counted as living with her parents in the 1870 US Census (in Union Twp, Wells Cty). I had not found a listing for Laura in the 1880 US Census, and her marriage record reported her name as "Laura F. Thomas."
Carrying my initial research forward with the assumption that Jane Anne's notes were correct, I had found records for this Laura and her husband John and their descendancy (through a single daughter and granddaughter, and four great-grandchildren), including Laura's death in 1943 and burial in Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton, Wells Cty, Indiana. One discrepancy I could not reconcile was that the census records and Laura's burial listing on the FindaGrave.com website (with a photograph of her headstone) reported her as several years younger than she should have been, with a birthdate of 1856 instead of 1849. In the abssence of other information, I let this stand for some time.
During some research into the Weible branch of our family, I reviewed some records for Daniel Weibel (originaly spelled "Weible"), younger brother of my fourth-great-grandmother Anne (Weible) Thomas, and found that after the death of his first wife he had married a much younger woman named Laura A.C. Thomas in Allen Cty, Indiana. Burial listings for the family on the FindaGrave.com website linked this Laura back to father John Lucas Flack Thomas, and carried the correct birthdates. Reviewing the records I had found based on the information in Jane Anne's notes, it seems very likely that the Laura F. Thomas who married John Allen Ketrow was actually a different woman, possibly a daughter of Isaiah Thomas, and that Jane Anne's work was in error, as was my own.
In trying to validate the likelihood that this newly-discovered scenario was true, I considered the likelihood of these two branches of the family meeting up again to pair Daniel Weibel and Laura for marriage, and realized the possibility was quite a realistic one. Laura's paternal uncle, my fourth-great-grandfather Rev. David F. Thomas, lived on a farm in Union Twp, Wells Cty, Indiana, not far from the home of Laura's parents, and the family must certainly been aware of the death of Daniel Weibel's first wife (née Catherine Palmer) in late 1874 in Bureau Cty, Illinois from letters and other family communication and correspondence. The separation in family lines was sufficient - Laura and Daniel were related only by a pair of marriages, and shared no known blood ancestry - and as Daniel was widower of about fifty years of age, with at least a few school-age children to raise, both the Thomas and the Weible families must have considered it a pragmatic move to encourage the two to court.
After their marriage, Laura and Daniel appear to have had only one child - Alfred Tenyson Weibel - whose children and descendancy appear to be the only continuation of Daniel's line that I have been able to find thus far. Daniel died in late 1890, and several years later Laura remarried to the widower Leander S. Newport; Laura and Leander are counted in the 1900 US Census in Princeton, Bureau Cty, Illinois. Leander died in spring of 1905, and I suspect that Laura then went to live with her son Alfred and his wife and children in Chicago, Cook Cty, Illinois, as that was her reported place of death just over two years after Leander died.
