Friday evening at her home on West Cherry Street, at the age of eighty-three years, surrounded by children and friends and in full retention of her faculties, Mrs. Elizabeth North Thomas passed quietly away after an illness of some three weeks of patient suffering. Her illness had been pronounced at the beginning an attack of the grip, but she grew rapidly worse and a few days ago developed pleurisy, which resulted in her death.

Elizabeth North Thomas was born on the sixth day of May, 1824, in St. Joe, Pennsylvania. Her early childhood and school days were spent in her native community and at the age of twenty-two she was united in marriage to John L.F. Thomas, a young mechanic of Tuscarawas County, Ohio. They resided in Ohio for fourteen years or until 1860, when they removed to Zanesville, this county. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas resided at that place until the death of the husband May 30, 1887, when the widow with her children, moved to this city where she has since made her home. The deceased was the mother of eight children, two sons and six daughters, of whom four survive to mourn her death. The surviving children are L.R. Thomas, a farmer of Huntington county; Mrs. Georgia Karns, of this city; Miss Ida Thomas, teacher in the primary grades of the Central school, who resided with her mother and Mrs. C.E. Jackson, of Winamac, Ind. The deceased was one of two daughters of a family of twelve and of these but three brothers are yet living. They are Charles North, of Wawaka, Ind., James North of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jerry North, of Oklahoma. Mrs. Thomas was afforded the satisfaction of making an extended visit with the first two of the brothers last summer.

The high standard of the character of the deceased needs no mention here. She was known to all with whom she came in contact as a woman unspotted from any of the world's buffetings and storms. She was a faithful and consistent christian and all through her long life of mingled joy and sorrow never for an instant lost her cheerful spirit and her interest in all things human. She was a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church.

The funeral occurred at the house at 8:30 o'clock on Tuesday morning in charge of Rev. Cecil. The interment took place in the family lot in the Zanesville burying ground.
