Narrative

[Obituary for Frederick Schwantes, from the Juneau Independent, 14 Apr 1911, p1.]

Frederick Schwantes, one of the best known farmers of the town of Hubbard, passed away in death at the family home east of this city on Saturday, April 8, 1911, at the age of 65 years. Death was the result of a paralytic stroke suffered some time ago and from the effects of which the deceased never fully recovered. Mr. Schwantes was known as an industrious farmer and a man in whom his neighbors placed the utmost confidence. By his death the community in which he lived loses one of its most honorable and highly respected citizens. His widow and seven children survive. The children are: Mrs. O.A. Zuehlke of the town of Oak Grove, Mrs. Frank Schroeder and Mrs. John Hein of Neosho, Mrs. August Schwensow, William and Herman Schwantes of Hubbard and August Schwantes at home. The funeral was held Wednesday from the Lutheran church at Horicon, Rev. O. Hanser officiating.

Narrative

In the text Dodge County, Wisconsin: Past and Present (volume II, S.J. Clarke Publishing, 1913), there are several passages about households of the Schwantes family - notably three brothers (Albert, Herman, and Henry) whose parents were August and Amelia (Schultz) Schwantes, natives of Pommern. August and Amelia were born around 1840-1842, and settled around Horicon in Dodge Cty, Wisconsin. It is possible that August is a brother or cousin of Frederich Schwantes, father of Ida (Schwantes) Hein, but I will need to do more research back in that family line to determine if this is the case.

Narrative

A search on the Ancestry.com account at the Oconomowoc Public Library shows a record for a Schwantes family, from Parlien, Preussen, on the ship Huddersfield with a departure from Hamburg of 10 Apr 1874, headed for New York via Liverpool. The family included the following:

Wilhelm Schwantes M 57
Dorothea Schwantes F 52
Augustine Schwantes F 20
Friedrich Schwantes M 28
Louise Schwantes F 28
Wilhelm Schwantes M 3/4

This lines up quite well with the information I have on Fred and Louise thus far, along with the placement of son William Schwantes' birthplace as overseas rather than in America. I've not yet found an arrival record, but would assume that it would be sometime in the summer of 1874.

It also gives me the names of Fred's parents, and a beginning point to search in Wisconsin records for them.
