Narrative
Eliza Jane, called Lyde by friends and family, never married and had no children. In the notes from Jane Anne Thomas transcribed by Jean Pasko, her date of death is given as 11 Apr 1926, though the obituary clipping in Jane Anne's files bears a handwritten date of 17 April 1926.
Jane Anne notes that her mother, Mary Alice (Bayha) Thomas, a niece of Lyde's, was especially close to her and spent a great deal of time with her growing up; Lyde was one of the few siblings of Mary Alice's father Franklin who was still living and still resident in Bluffton, and was fairly close to Franklin's age. Lyde worked as a tailor for her primary occupation, but spent a great deal of time working with her friend Ben Ashbaucher, a well-known photographer in Bluffton. Lyde became quite a skilled photographer in her own right, and was often borrowing Ben's equipment or even his aid in doing her own photo shoots. I have several pieces from a series Lyde had shot and printed of her niece Mary Alice Bayha (my great-grandmother) and her great-nephew Robert Carlton Baumgartner when the two children were toddlers.
