Narrative
Note: Researching Samuel L. Swihart
I have only found a handful of indexed records that seem most likely to apply to Samuel and his household, with a few gaps that add to the questions. He first appears in his father's household in the 1870 US Census, and again in his widowed mother's household in the 1880 US Census, both in Van Wert, Van Wert Cty, Ohio. Following this is a indexed marriage record from Van Wert Cty on 29 Jan 1888 for "S.L. Swihart and S.E. Buckles Leigh," with no other information given on the index entry.
Next are the US Census listings from 1900 through 1920 in Toledo, Lucas Cty, Ohio for Samuel and Sarah Swihart. In each listing, Sarah's age is given as four or five years greater than Samuel's, and Samuel's age is consistently reported in line with his birthdate as taken from his gravestone. (Notable in the 1910 listing is his mother, Christina, living with him, along with his niece Ruth Swihart.)
The 1927 death record for Sarah E. Swihart gives dates that match those on the gravestone she shares with Samuel and a death location in Toledo, and while I have not found a 1930 US Census listing for Samuel, he does appear in the 1940 US Census in Toledo, with his marital status given as "widowed." Following that is a death record form 1942 for Samuel which also gives vitals that match those on his gravestone.
Though the 1890 US Census listing for him is obviously not available, those that followed show no children of Samuel's living with him and his wife - only other family members and boarders, at times. The only indication I have found to show that Samuel and Sarah may have had any children is an indexed death record (with no image of the original record available) from early 1894 for L.C. Quintus Swihart, a four-year-old boy who died in Toledo with only the mother named on the index as "Sarah E. Buckles" and his birthplace given as "VanWert, Ohio." No burial information is given on the index entry, and I have not found a burial listing for him as of yet, though I would expect he is buried in the same cemetery as his parents. Given the time that has passed, it seems likely that his burial location may be lost. That I have been able to determine, this was the only child that seems to have been born to Samuel and Sarah, and he does not seem to have survived long.
Sarah's identity is not entirely established, either; in all the available census listings after her marriage, her birthplace is given as Ohio, but her death record reports her birthplace as Tipton, Tipton Cty, Indiana. On that death record, her parents are named "Zebedee T. Brins" and "Myron Pierson." Searches for a Zebedee Brins didn't turn up much, though Zebedee Buckles gave both some records of military pension from service in an Indiana regiment during the Civil War and a US Census record in 1870 from Rush Cty, Indiana for a "Z. Buckles" with wife "Miriam" (both Ohio-born) and several Indiana-born children, including a nine-year-old "Sarah E." I think it likely that this is the Sarah that would later marry Samuel Swihart, though possibly after a previous marriage (as their marriage record gave her another surname, Leigh). She may have been divorced, but I find it more likely she was widowed without children when she and Samuel married.
As mentioned above, I have found no indication that Samuel and Sarah had any surviving children.
