Narrative
Note: Chester Swihart and family
There are a few notable gaps in the records I have been able to find for Chester and his family, though I believe I have found enough to have a relatively good picture which is admittedly completed with some guesses.
After the 1880 US Census listing in his mother's household, the next record found for Chester is a marriage form Lucas Cty, Ohio in 1897, two days before Christmas, to German-born Anna Minek (or similar, to be reviewed further below). A few short years later, Chester and Anna can be found living in Toledo, Lucas Cty, Ohio in the 1900 US Census, with his mother Christina living with them.
That I have been able to determine, Chester and Anna's only child (Edna M.) was born in Toledo a few weeks after their tenth wedding anniversary, when the two of them were in their late thirties. A bit more than three months later, Anna died in April of 1908. Following that should have been the 1910 US Census listing for Chester and his family, but I have not managed to find either Chester or Edna in the year's records.
In early 1918, nearly ten years after Anna's death, Chester remarried to Jessie M. (Walter) Harrison, herself a widow, and the two of them were counted with Edna in the 1920 US Census in Ross Twp, Wood Cty, Ohio. I have not managed to find a 1930 US Census record for Chester or Jessie, though Edna can be found that year living as a boarder in Chicago, Cook Cty, Illinois.
The next record I can find for Chester is his death record in late 1932 in Toledo, after which he was buried in Forest Cemetery in Toledo (where his first wife, Anna, is buried). Jessie survived him by just over ten years, and died in Toledo in early 1943. She is buried in Willow Cemetery in Oregon, Lucas Cty. In those intervening years between their deaths, there should be a 1940 US Census record for Jessie, but I have not managed to find it as of yet.
As Chester and Jessie married when he was forty-eight and she was forty-two, and as there were no additional children living with them in 1920, I am confident they had no children together. I have not determined whether Jessie had any children from her first marriage, nor have I found any indication that she remarried after Chester's death. As for Chester, all indications point to Edna being his only child.
As for Edna, after her residence in Chicago in 1930, the next record I can find for her is her US Social Security Death Index record, naming her Edna Swihart and giving her death as July 1986 and her last residence as Phoenix, Maricopa Cty, Arizona. I have not found any marriage records for her, nor any indication that she ever married or had children. Additionally, I have not found any burial listing for her, which suggests to me she may have outlived not just her parents, but possibly her first cousins as well (of which there appear to have been only two), and there may well have been no relatively close family (by relations or geography) to handle the arrangements of her burial following her death.
Returning to the question of Anna's maiden name, the records I can find give that she was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1869, though when she came to America is unknown to me at this time. Whether her parents immigrated as well is also uncertain to me. The records I can find that give her maiden name give a variety of spellings and anglicizations, and the one I have used stems from her death record. I would readily believe that her surname was actually Minnich or similar, as some of the indexed records seem to lie in that direction for spelling. I have not had any luck finding records in Ohio that clearly belong to her parents (named Henry Minek and Christina Hagen, or similar) to help confirm her surname.
