Narrative

[Obituary for "Edward Stuber," paper and date unknown but believed to be the Huntington Press or the Huntington Daily News Democrat, 5 Sep 1918; clipping from the files of Jane Anne Thomas.]

[headline] Edward Stuber [sic] Dies at Age of Sixty-Seven

Edward Stuber, 67 years old, died yesterday morning at 1:30 o'clock at the residence, 331 Cline street. He had been ailing for the past three years but was seriously ill for about two weeks. The deceased was a member of the Sickafoose U.B. church.

Mr. Stuber was born February 15, 1851, to Jacob and Anna Stuber, of Pennsylvania. He married Ella Wilson, August 20, 1871, to which union seven children were born, four being deceased.

Surviving besides the widow are the following children, Mrs. Myrtle Reynolds, of this city, Mrs. Ona Hubert of Defiance, Ohio, and Henry Stuber of this city, six grandchildren, two brothers, Alfred Stuber of this city and Jacob Stuber of Larwell, Indiana, and four sisters, Mrs. Mary McConhey of Howard, Kansas, Mrs. Sivilla Kiger of near Etna Green Indiana, Mrs. Emma Stoy of Warren township, and Mrs. Addie Bender of Warren township.

The funeral will be held Friday, leaving the residence at 10 o'clock with the Rev. J.A. White officiating, assisted by the Rev. Orval Heath. Burial will be at the People's cemetery.

[Editing note: the clipping is believed to be from the Huntington Press or the Daily News Democrat because of the differences seen in the text (viewed on the newspapers.com website's OCR'ed version) from the obituary that ran in the Huntington Herald - with the major difference being that the Herald spelled his name correctly. Additionally, the Herald obituary ran in the 4 Sep 1918 issue, and gave only the time of death, while the clipping gives the time and the date as "yesterday morning," suggesting that the paper from which the clipping came ran the obituary on 5 Sep 1918.]

Narrative

In the 3 Apr 1905 issue (p1) of the Huntington Daily News Democrat there is mention of Edward Stuver suing the city for an injury suffered from a fall on a boardwalk.

Narrative

Note: The Children of Edward Stuver

The initial information I had on Edward's children was from notes and files from Jane Anne Thomas and Franklin Harry Bayha; each of them noted that Edward and his wife Ella had several children, some of which had "died young." Neither of them seemed to have much information on half or more of the proposed children, and their lists and names did not entirely agree. Franklin Harry had noted five of the children as having died young, and included Ona amongst them. One of them, named Ota, exists only in one descendancy chart drawn up by Franklin Harry, and as he didn't seem to have much information about Ona, I wondered if this was a mistake in transcription somewhere, and the record he'd viewed had referred to Ona. Likewise, Jane Anne's lists included some data referring to "Clemmie," which seems to be a record transcription erorr that also refers to Ona. Both Edward's and Ella's obituaries name three surviving children out of a total of seven born to them. Of those that didn't survive, the names I find most commonly include William, Walter, and Lucretia.

A separate search turns up listings (with photos) on the FindaGrave.com website for four burials for Stuver children in Concord Cemetery, Wabash Cty, Indiana, for children whose gravestones denote them as children of "E & E." The website lists some vital dates and name information, but I suspect some of this is inaccurate, as the photos show the stones in a fairly advanced degree of erosion. Grave rubbings would likely provide a more clear view of the inscriptions on the stones.

Aside from those presumed infant or childhood deaths, there is fairly substantial documentation for and knowledge of the three children of Edward who are known to have reached adulthood. The large gaps between them in ages (nearly seven years between Myrtle and Ona, and over six years between Ona and Henry) suggest that some of the other siblings were born in between the survivors. Finding the 1880 US Census record for Edward's household might well shed light on whether any of the middle children survived long enough to be counted in the household. Of the three surviving children, the family lines did not extend much further for two of them:

Myrtle married Edward Andrew Reynolds, and had two daughters - Irene, who had no children, and Esther, who had one son, Terry, who died at about twenty-five years of age. Terry is not believed to have married or fathered any children prior to his death.

Henry married Bertha Powell, and they had two daughters. The first lived only a few days, while the second, Eloise, died just a month shy of her twelfth birthday.

Ona had three children - two sons, Glenn and Lester, and a daughter, Pauline - and nine grandchildren, eight of whom were still living after her husband's death in 1961. Ona's family is believed to be the only surviving descendancy of Edward Stuver.
