Narrative

Note: Researching Charlotte Stuver

The last records I can find for Charlotte Stuver are the two listings for her in the 1880 Census - one that places her in the household of George Smith, listed as a servant, while the other in her parents' household in Warren, Huntington Cty, Indiana - and then her marriage record to Hiram Winch in 1884. The death date I have for her is from notes in the files of Jane Anne Thomas; I have nothing more specific and no sources at this point. I can point out that she was not named as a survivor in her father's obituary in 1904, suggesting she'd died prior to his death (and as such, earlier than 1906 as found in Jane Anne's files). I have no burial location for her thus far, either.

Confusingly enough, I have also not found much evidence of Hiram Winch in the records searches as of yet. The marriage record for Hiram and Charlotte gives his age "at next birthday" as 35 (making his year of birth about 1849), his occupation as "brick mason," and his birthplace as Pennsylvania. His parents' names are given as Aaron Winch and Catherine Vinehold (or similar). The closest match I can find is a household in Lehigh Cty, Pennsylvania, headed by the widowed Kate Winch (age 50) with her sister Polly and Kate's son, Hiram (age 26, born about 1854). Outside of this, I haven't found any other close match - and any searches for Aaron Winch have so far failed to turn up any records of such a man married to a Catherine and father to Hiram.

I do not believe Charlotte and Hiram simply relocated and "vanished," as the Stuvers seemed to have kept in touch and kept track of each other - for example, oldest sister Mary married and moved to Kansas, but still shows up in a few family photos in later years back in Indiana. I also don't believe the two of them had any children, for the same reason - the rest of the family likely would have known about such children, and may well have had photographs. This pair will require further research to find out what happened after their marriage in 1884.

ADDENDUM: In one family gathering photo found in the files of Jane Anne Thomas are a few adults that Mary Alice (Bayha) Thomas was unable to identify or name in her notes on the back of the photo. In Jane Anne's files was a print-out of an email written by John Kiger (whom I believe to be a descendant of Savilla (Stuver) Kiger) from 1998 that describes this same group photo. The photo itself is a medium-size print, with the standing adults appearing less than an inch tall each. In his list of those pictured, John names one of the adults (unnamed by Mary Alice) as Charlotte Winch. That would make this group photo the only known photo I have found thus far of Charlotte (Stuver) Winch.
