Narrative

Note: Researching John Imel's later-life household

John outlived his first wife, Amanda (Eley), by twenty-five years, and in late 1893 he remarried to the divorcée Susan (Smith) Degler. The two of them were found living with John's oldest son Michael (a young widower with three children) in the 1900 US Census in Madison Twp, Jay Cty, Indiana. Also living with them was Susan's daughter Hannah Degler, a young woman of twenty.

As of the 1910 US Census, the household had relocated to Marion Twp, Charlevoix Cty, Michigan, and consisted only of John, his wife Susan, John's son Michael, and Michael's youngest child Nellie. I do not know yet what brought the family to Michigan, but at some point it seems they must have returned to Indiana, as John, Susan, Michael, and all three of Michael's children (and their spouses) are buried in Indiana, in Jay Cty and the surrounding area.
