Narrative

Initial research and information on the descendancy of Barbara Thomas courtesy of Jim Flack.

By the time of the 1840 US Census, Barbara (surname Gimlin) was given as the head of household for her family in York Twp, Tuscarawas Cty, Ohio. She and her family would continue to live there for many years, until sometime between 1860 and 1866, when the entire family moved to Daviess Cty, Indiana. By 1870 Barbara was living with her daughter Rebecca and son-in-law Jacob Shull and their family in Van Buren Twp, Daviess Cty, Indiana, and was counted again with them in 1880 in Barr Twp in the same county. Her date of death and burial location are unknown, but she seems to have died sometime before 1900, as she was no longer listed with either of her children's households that year.

Interestingly, in the 1850 and 1860 US Census listings for Barbara there is also a young man named Jacob C., b. 1846 or 1847; in the earlier listing he's given the surname Thomas, while in the later listing he's listed with the surname "Gumlin." (The entire family is given the misspelled surname in the index; I do not know if it's misspelled on the original record, as I have not verified.) I strongly suspect this was the youngest son of her brother Jacob Thomas and his wife, Anne or Anna. Jacob's household in 1850 included only his older children and himself, suggesting that his wife had died prior to 1850, while he himself likely died sometime prior to 1870 (as all his children had left Ohio by that time).

Barbara's birthplace has thus far just been found recorded on the US Census records from 1850 through 1880, where it is usually reported as Virginia but once (1860) reported as Pennsylvania. Her parents married in Maryland in 1796, and she was the oldest child, born sometime in 1797 during their early years of their marriage as they migrated west. Virginia seems the most likely place, and possibly in the region (close to Pennsylvania) that would become West Virginia during the Civil War.
