Narrative
Note: The marriages of Charles Grier Stonebraker
The information I have on most of the Stonebraker lineages had initially come from what I dubbed the Stonebraker Genealogy Booklet, a document that was generated by an older version of Family Tree Maker software and published by Bob and Dean Stonebraker, first cousins of my grandmother, Kathryn Claire (Stonebraker) Thomas. They had focussed primarily on their direct lineage, and hadn't uncovered as much information on the side branches of the descendancy of John Stonebraker and Mary Kellenberger.
In their work, they'd listed three wives for Charles Grier Stonebraker - and had them listed in order as Calla M. (York) Merkle, Emma C. Pangle (occasionally transcribed as "Paugle"), and Hettie Allen. Their publication doesn't list sources, so I haven't yet verified, but they had published wedding dates for two of these three marriages. Additionally, they included an obituary for Calla, in which she's noted as the widow of Charles Grier Stonebraker and step-mother to his two sons. While I don't yet have a marriage date for Charles and Calla, this would strongly indicate to me that Calla was his third wife.
As for the remaining two, the marriage dates alone would indicate the order in which they occurred, along with the order of westward progression - he married Emma in 1894 in Ohio, and married Hettie in 1897 in Indiana. Hettie bore him two sons (Gaynor Allen in 1899, Harry Elred in 1901), and died in Illinois in 1901.
My assumption at this point is that his first wife, Emma, died prior to 1897, shortly after they were married. I do not have information on her date of death or location of her burial, and I have no information on whether or not she had any children at this point. (It is possible that Charles and Emma divorced, but I find that particularly unlikely in that region and time period.) Charles then moved west, into Indiana, and met and married Hettie in 1897. The family continued to move west, with their first son born in Illinois in 1899. Hettie died in 1901, less than a month after the birth of their second son, suggesting that complications from childbirth were likely contributors to her death. Charles then continued to move west, into Iowa, and settled in Buchanan Cty sometime around 1905 (according to his obituary). At some point he married the widowed mother of one Calla (Merkle) York, and the family lived in Buchanan Cty, Iowa until the death of Charles in 1952 and Calla in 1957.
ADDENDUM: I have to correct my assumption about the end of Charles' and Emma's marriage - they had a daughter, Hazel Frances (Stonebraker) Griffith, whose death record named them as her parents. Further research indicated that she was born July of 1894, barely six months after her parents married, and her mother (as Emma C. Stonebraker) married the much-older William Leonard in December 1898. Hazel is found with her mother in Leonard's household in the 1900 US Census, and by 1912 she'd married (to Edward B. Griffith) and had her first and only child (daughter Vivian Miriam Griffith) in late 1919. I don't know the ultimate fate of Emma Pangle, nor do I have burial locations for either Emma or her second husband William. Hazel's death record in 1932 (preceding her father's death by twenty years) indicates she was buried in Marysville Cemetery in Union Cty, Ohio, though this cemetery was relocated to Oakdale Cemetery in Marysville at some point in the late 19th or early 20th century, and I've found no listing for her on FindaGrave.com either. Vivian died in Detroit, Wayne Cty, Michigan in 1944, unmarried and without children.
I do not know the details of what may have ended Charles' and Emma's marriage, but it seems quite possible that he may well have abandoned and divorced her, as he was the one to move out-of-state.
His obituary states he was survived by six grandchildren; all of these must be children of his son Harry Elred Stonebraker, as son Gaynor had no children of his own and even were his daughter's family considered in the obituary (and there is no mention of Hazel or Vivian), both his daughter and her daughter had preceded him in death, so Vivian wouldn't have been counted amongst the six.
