Narrative

[Obituary for Gaynor A. Stonebraker, from the Mount Vernon News, dated January 1979.]

Gaynor A. Stonebraker, 79, died at his home in Mount Vernon Jan. 11, 1979, after a short illness. Mr. Stonebraker was born June 20, 1899 at Genoa, Ill., and had resided in Mount Vernon the last 40 years. He married the former Alma E. Ohlfest, March 19, 1967, at Mount Vernon. A veteran of World War I, he was a carpenter and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, and the American Legion.

Surviving in addition to his wife are stepsons, Arthur E. Ohlfest of Florence, Ariz., Robert C. Ohlfest, Mount Vernon, and Charles C. Ohlfest, Elk Grove Village, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Velma Koopmans, San Jacinto, Calif.; 15 step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.

Services were held Monday at Morgan Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon, the Rev. Richard L. Thompson of Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence. Memorials can be sent to Trinity Church and the American Cancer Society. All of Mrs. Stonebraker's children attended the services. Mrs. Stonebraker is vacating her house in Mt. Vernon and plans to accompany her daughter Mrs. John Koopmans to make her home in San Jacinto, Calif.

Narrative

Note: Marriages of Gaynor Allen Stonebraker

In the Stonebraker Genealogy Booklet, Bob and Dean Stonebraker had noted two marriages for Gaynor Allen; the first to Lurena A. Thompson, and the second on 19 Mar 1967 to Alma E. Ohlfest. (I have presumed at this point that Ohlfest was her married name, and that she was likely widowed prior to her marriage to Gaynor Allen.)

Gaynor's obituary mentions no born children, only four step-children (all Alma's children). It would appear that Gaynor had no children, or none that survived him.

ADDENDUM: Additional research has turned up the marriage record for Gaynor and Lurena (mistranscribed as Laurene in the record index) in 1923, and census records for the couple in 1930 and 1940 in Iowa. Other than Lurena's father, no one else is listed as living in their household in those records. This strongly suggests that my presumption from Gaynor's obituary is correct, and that he had no children of his own.
