Narrative

[Wedding announcement for Franklin Bayha and Effie Stuver, paper unknown but presumed to be a Bluffton publication.]

MARRIED - An estimable young couple started joyously on the pathway of life as man and wife Thursday evening, in the marriage of Franklin Bayha and Miss Effie Stuver. The ceremony was performed at exactly seven o'clock, Rev. W.H Xanders officiating, in the presence of immediate relatives and friends of the parties, at the home of the bride at her grandparent's, George Forst and wife, of West Cherry street. The bride was becomingly attired in a rich rose colored costume, and wore yellow Marceal Neil roses. The groom was smiling and happy in the conventional black. After the ceremony the guests partook of an elegant wedding supper.

Mrs. Bayha has formed many friends since removing here recently from Huntington. The groom is a well known cigar maker living on Miller street. We join friends of the couple in extending congratulation. They were the recipients of some very useful presents, including furniture, dining table and a handsome dinner set.

The couple left this morning for a bridal tour of Huntington, where they spend a few days visiting the bride's father.

Narrative

Jane Anne Thomas writes in the Wells County, Indiana Family History text that Effie Stuver was raised by her grandparents. Additionally, the newspaper article on Effie and Franklin Bayha's wedding states that they were married in the home of her grandparents, George and Harriet Forst, in Bluffton, and that the newlyweds would be visiting the home of her father in Huntington following the wedding.

Handwritten notes (by Jean Pasko) contained in Jane Anne's files, presumably from discussions and interviews with Jane Anne, mentioned that Effie was raised by her grandparents, the Forsts, because she did not get along with her step-mother, Martha Jane Cooper. I find this credible, but have not managed to validate it through census records or other documents as of yet. That I have been able to determine, she does not seem to be included in the 1880 record for her grandfather's household, but I have not seen the record for her father's household for that same year to see if she is included there. I have obviously not seen the 1890 records for either household, and Effie and Franklin were married late that year.

Jane Anne also writes that after the death of her husband, Effie lived at her home in Bluffton until 1955, when she moved to rural Union Twp in Huntington Cty to live with her daughter Mary Alice (Bayha) Thomas and son-in-law Floyd Thomas Sr. She remained there until her death in 1967. Effie's obituary gives the time she lived in Huntington Cty as much shorter (four years).

Jane Anne was quite close to her grandmother as a child and as an adult, even before Effie moved to their farm, and she and her mother worked quite closely with Effie on family history and geneaology. Effie kept diligently to tending and decorating family graves, including for the Forsts (her mother's side of the family). My father remembers traipsing all over cemeteries in multiple counties with Effie (his great-grandmother) as a child and a young man, listening to her stories of people she remembered in the various families to which she was connected - Forst, Stuver, Bayha.
