Note: Henry and Hannah (Byrum) Shaw

While there is the obvious gap between their marriage in 1882 and the first census record for their household in 1900, it does not appear that Henry and Hannah had any children of their own. In the 1910 US Census, eleven-year-old Nellie Sharott is living with them, listed as a foster-daughter. Otherwise, there is no one else in their household from 1900 through 1940.

There is a shared headstone for them in Weimer Cemetery, Saratoga, Randolph Cty, Indiana (where a large portion of Henry's family is buried), but the death date is not complete for either of them. This would also tend to indicate that they had no children (or at least no living children) at the time of their deaths, so there was no one close enough to them to make sure the engraving was completed.

I have not yet found death records or dates for Henry and Hannah, though they were both still alive as of the 1940 US Census. The obituaries for some of Henry's siblings might help narrow down their death dates.

ADDENDUM: Henry's obituary states that only his widow and his sister Amanda survive, which would seem to further confirm that Henry and Hannah had no children.

Funeral services for Henry Richard Shaw, an 89-year-old retired farmer, who died at 2:50 p. m. Friday at his home in Saratoga, will be held at the Saratoga Church of God Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Roll Marsh officiating. Interment will be made in the Weimer cemetery at Saratoga.

The remains have been removed from the Brooks and Sons funeral home in Union City to the residence where friends may call.

The death of Mr. Shaw was the result of injuries he sustained when he tripped and fell while fixing some fence six weeks ago.

A Randolph county native, he was born on March 7, 1857, son of James and Elizabeth Burton-Shaw. He attended the old No. 11 school north of Saratoga, and was married to Hanna Byrum in this county in 1882. Mr. Shaw was a member of the Church of God.

Besides his wife, the only immediate survivor is a sister, Mrs. Amanda Jud, of Saratoga.
