Narrative

On the marriage record for Russell Orin Shaw and Goldie Imel, Russell's father's name is reported as Edward, not Edmund. On the marriage record for Bertha Shaw and Ralph Isenbarger, he is named Edwin. It seems that no one was very clear on what his name actually was.

There is mention of his older sister (Minerva) as an early member (1866) and deaconess (1875) of the Winchester Disciples' Church in The History of Randolph County 1882 (Indiana), but no mention of Edmund Shaw or his parents James or Elizabeth Shaw.

There is mention as well in the Randolph County History of both a J.T. Shaw and a J.L. Shaw - unknown if either of these could be James Shaw, father of Edmund Shaw. There is also mention of a Joseph Shaw (b.1796 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania), father to Gideon Shaw and Benjamin R. Shaw; Aaron Shaw; A.B. Shaw; Lafayette Shaw; R.C. Shaw; D.E. Shaw.

Further note on the Joseph Shaw family - he was married to Sarah Ramsey, came to Randolph County in 1830 or 1831, and on p374, of his six sons and six daughters, the following are listed:
- Lydia Ann, married to Harrison Anderson.
- Gideon (b.1821), farmer, broker, and trader of some wealth.
- Hester, married to Joseph Thomas.
- Mary Elizabeth, died young.
- Jasper, merchant and tailor.
- Rachel, married a Manning.
- John Thompson, merchant and tailor; in his bio (p461) is mentioned a brother, Samuel.
- Martin Van Buren, died young.
- Martha Polly (?).
- Benjamin R., carpenter and farmer, later a "pettifogger" of "considerable notoriety."

There is _also_ note of a Mercy Shaw, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth Shaw of Wayne County, Indiana, on her marriage in 1849 to John A. Moorman.

There is a bio for a Reuben C. Shaw (b.1826, Boston), son of ship captain David E. Shaw. In the 1850s Reuben moved to Randolph County and set up a farm and mill to finance his business of home and building construction. His children listed are Walter C., Sylvera B., Josephine W., Frank L., and Frederick P.

Other than Minerva Shaw, there appears to be no clear tie to James or Edmund Shaw noted in that text.

It should be noted that there was an Edmund B. Shaw (b. 18 Sep 1824 in New York state), son of Patrick and Cynthia (Beers) Shaw, who was resident in Wells Cty, Indiana, and who fought in the Civil War; this is not the same man as is my ancestor. The proximity in geography and (somewhat) in age can lead to some confusion in records searches. My ancestor Edmund would have still been a young boy at the beginning of the Civil War.

ADDENDUM: While looking for potential parentage for James, I noted that his marriage in 1843 was in Athens Cty, Ohio; in the 1840 US Census, there is a household for Eli Shaw in Ward, Athens Cty, Ohio with the following counted family members:

M0-5: 1
M5-10: 1
M10-15: 2
M15-20: 2
M40-50: 1
F0-5: 1
F5-10: 1
F20-30: 1
F30-40: 1

This could be the household of James' father, as he could be one of the two young men in the 15-20 tally.

Additionally, there is a household for Joel Shaw in Athens Cty, Ohio - in York Twp in 1830, and in Trimble Twp in 1840 - with the following counts (with or without assuming these records are for the same man).

1830 1840
M0-5 1 1
M5-10 2
M10-15 2 1
M15-20 3
M20-30 1
M30-40 1
M40-50 1
F0-5 1
F5-10 2 1
F10-15
F15-20
F20-30 1
F30-40 1

This man seems a more likely candidate to me, if only because James named his firstborn son Joel. On the other hand, James and his wife Elizabeth married in Ward Twp, so that gives a mark in favor of Eli.

SECOND ADDENDUM: A photo has been added to the listing for James on the FindaGrave.com website; this photo includes his date of death (29 Oct 1877) and his age at death ("57Y & 7D"), calculating back to a birthdate of 22 Oct 1820.
