Note: Researching Amanda Shaw

There seem to be several possible marriages and records for Amanda Shaw, after the last confirmed record (1880 US Census listing for her widowed mother's household). The first of these is a marriage record in 1882, in Randolph Cty, Indiana, to William Jarrett. I've obviously not found a census record for this couple's household

There is another marriage record, also in Randolph Cty, in January 1895, for either Amanda Shaw or Amanda Jarrett (depending upon the record inspected) to "Wm A Roberson." That same couple (William A. and Amanda J. Roberson) shows up in a 1900 US Census record in Wayne Twp, Randolph Cty, Indiana, with three adolescent or adult children: Ollie Jarrett (stepdaughter, age 16), Goldie Jarrett (stepdaughter, age 12), and Ora Roberson (son, age 22).

Next is a marriage record for "Shaw" in 1903 in Randolph Cty to Henry Judy; this record also names Amanda's parents as James Shaw and Elizabeth Burton, making it a more sure match, and gives her name as "Amanda Robertson Shaw."

The next US Census record is for 1910 for Henry L. Judy, age 36, with wife Amanda J. Judy, age 50, daughter Gladys V. Judy, age 13, and stepdaughter Goldie Jarrett, age 21. (This makes another link to the Amanda married to William Jarrett and to William Roberson.) In the 1920 and 1930 US Census listings, Henry's household is just himself and his wife Amanda. Additionally, this Amanda gives her father's birthplace as Ohio and her mother's as England.

(One record that doesn't seem to match the others is a 1902 marriage record in Randolph Cty for George Earl Moore to Amanda Shaw. This same couple appears to be living in Madison Cty, Indiana through the 1930 US Census, and this Amanda gives both her parents' birthplace as Indiana, and is six years younger than Amanda, daughter of James and Elizabeth, so this doesn't seem to be her.)

Henry died in 1939, and is buried in Saratoga Cemetery, Saratoga, Randolph Cty, Indiana, where his first wife (Elnora Skinner Judy, d. 1902) is buried. I have not located a death date nor a burial location for Amanda, nor do I know the fate of her previous two marriages - whether they ended in divorce or in death. I suspect that Ollie and Goldie Jarrett are her only two born children, but I have not confirmed this.

Goldie married Jacob Elmer Bowers in Randolph Cty in 1910, and stayed resident in the county through the remainder of her life. She had two children, Ruby and Vaughn, and she died in 1967. Goldie is buried with her husband Elmer in Saratoga Cemetery.

In a case of names almost destined to confuse researchers as to their genders, Amanda's daughter Ollie married (male) Dora Milligan in Randolph Cty in 1901, and lived in White River Twp, Randolph Cty through at least 1940. She had seven children - Thelma, Hazel, Wallace, John, Helen, Paul, and Mary - and died in 1967. She is buried in Fountain Park Cemetery, Winchester, Randolph Cty, with her husband Dora.

ADDENDUM: Her brother Henry's obituary names her his only surviving sibling in 1946, and names her Mrs. Amanda Jud; I've assumed this is a typo, and the surname should have been printed as Judy.
