Narrative

The source I have that names him Joecephus is the photo card of the Espich family descendancy of Charles and Lydia (Beaber) Espich; on most census records, he is called Josephus, and by the 1940 US Census he was calling himself Joseph. The photocard gives his middle name as Orange, while his WWI draft registration card gives his middle name as Ora. His draft card also gives his birthdate as 31 Dec 1875, while the photocard gives the year as 1874.

He names his mother Lydia as his family contact on his WWI draft card, and in the 1930 US census he was living on his own in Union Twp, Wells Cty, Indiana, with his age given as 48. By the time of the 1940 US Census, he was listed as living with his wife Trella (named Trilla on the photocard), with no children in the household. That census record gives their ages as 58 (husband) and 48 (wife). Whether this error was due to Joseph or to the census takers is unknown; in the 1900 US Census listing for his father's household, his age is given clearly as 25.

I am not aware of any children that Joseph may have had. His wife's name on the photocard is given as Trilla Shoemaker. I have not yet located burial sites for either of them as of yet.
