A retired Bluffton postal employee, Edward J. "Pete" Call, 86, died at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Christian Care Retirement Community, where he had resided since April 1998. He had been ill since March 1998.

He served with the U.S. Postal Service for 29 years, retiring in 1975. He became a substitute mail carrier on Oct. 15, 1948, a regular city carrier the following year and shifted to a rural route carrier on Jan. 30, 1965.

He was honored in 1990 as Wells County's "Older Hoosier" for his years of involvement in community and civic affairs. He had resided at 815 South Johnson St.

Mr. Call was a member of the Bluffton Parks and Recreation Board for five years and helped in the formation of the Little League baseball program in Bluffton when a member of the Bluffton Kiwanis Club.

He was employed by Swisher Lumber Co, when he entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 for service during World War II in the Philippines until 1945. Following service, he was employed as a Standard Oil agent and before entering the postal service on June 30, 1949.

He was a member of the Bluffton Volunteer Fire Department and served as its chief from Jan. 1, 1948 to June 30, 1949 and while in that capacity originated the July 4th fireworks display at the 4-H Park.

He was appointed in 1948 as the Wells County veterans service officer, serving for several years.

Mr. Call was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he began the "handyman" for many projects. He was custodian also for the Craigville Cemetery.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Blue Lodge since 1939 and the Scottish Rite since 1943. He was a member also of American Legion Post 111 and a member and director of the Wells County Council on Aging.

He was born at Craigville May 8, 1913 to Joseph and Alverta Vaughn Call. His marriage at Rushville on Dec. 23, 1935 was to Mary Belle Wilson, who survives.

Surviving also is a sister, Edith Kramer of Warren, and several nieces and nephews. Five brothers are deceased.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Cindy Osgood and Rev. Larry Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery at Ossian. American Legion Post 111 will perform graveside military rites.

Calling hours at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home will be Friday from 1 to 8 p.m. The body will be taken to the church at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Memorials to the church or to Christian Care.
