Narrative

Note: Researching the marriages and children of Hannah (Ogle) DeWitt

Despite the online pedigrees and family trees that give Hannah as the mother of between six and twelve children, I have not had much luck solidly confirming her descendancy with proper sources at this point - owing both to the very large preponderance of DeWitt families with similarly-named individuals throughout eastern and central Indiana in the 19th century, and to some inconsistencies in reported names and ages of the children in her household as reported in the early census records. I have not yet found many records or documents specifically linking Hannah's purported children to her or to her husband (their presumed father), Lorenzo DeWitt, and in some of the cases I have not managed to find any record of these potential children after those early census records. Additionally, I suspect that a few of the youngest children (attributed to her in those early records or in online, often unsourced pedigrees) are quite possibly her grandchildren, and not her children, but again this is unconfirmed.

I have strong confidence that the Hannah Ogle married to Lorenzo DeWitt is the eldest daughter of David Ogle (from his first marriage), as she would have been counted in his household in the 1840 US Census (in which listing there was recorded one woman aged fifteen to twenty) in rural Delaware Cty, Indiana, and a marriage record for Hannah and Lorenzo was recorded in August of 1841, just over a year later, also in Delaware Cty, Indiana. I will also note that David Ogle's will, written and witnessed in 1872, named his daughter "Hannah DeWitt" as one of his heirs. At the time of the will's writing, Hannah had not yet remarried, and so still bore the DeWitt surname, despite having remarried (in 1877) before David's death (in 1879). (I will note that this was not the only item not corrected in David's will between the time of its writing and his death several years later).

I am confident, as well, that the Huntington Cty, Indiana marriage record in 1877 between "Hannah DeWitt" and Martin Call pertains to the same woman; Lorenzo having died in 1864, the 1870 US Census lists the widowed Hannah as still living (with seven younger DeWitts, some or all of whom were likely her children) on their farm in Union Twp, Huntington Cty, just a few households away from Martin Call and his second wife Elizabeth, prior to Elizabeth's death in 1876. The 1880 US Census places Martin and Hannah in the same household as his youngest two children, William and Adelia, with no potential children of Hannah's living with them.

The 1900 US Census was conducted primarily in June; there is a death record for "Hannah Call" from nearby Wells Cty, Indiana just weeks earlier in May of 1900. I would expect that Hannah was likely living with one of her children at the time of her death, but I have been unable to confirm this.

Of her purported children, I have some degree of confidence in seven of them, though I have been able to establish descendancies for only two of them:

- Alfred (b. 1842), the apparent oldest, appears only in the 1850 and 1860 US Census records for his parents' household; he may have served in the Army during the Civil War, and possibly been injured and resident in a medical facility for the remainder of his life, but this is unconfirmed.

- David (b. 1843) appears only in the 1850 US Census listing for the family, and not again afterwards; whether he died young or struck out on his own as an adolescent is uncertain.

- Nancy Jane (b. 1847) married John J. Call, and had seven children and nearly three dozen grandchildren.

- Canaan (b. 1850) appears to have lived at home until his twenties prior to marrying in 1876; I have not found record of him past that point.

- Isaac (b. 1852), like his brother Canaan, appears to have lived at home through at least 1870; he may be the same Isaac DeWitt who married in 1871 (to Sarah Eliza Preston) and fathered three children prior to his death before the 1880 US Census, but this is unconfirmed.

- Malinda (b. 1855), like Canaan and Isaac, appears to have lived at home until at least the time of the 1870 US Census; she may be the Malinda DeWitt that married Daniel Welldy in 1871, but this is unconfirmed.

- Sarah Catherine (b. 1859), the youngest known child of Hannah and Lorenzo, married Stephen Swain and had three children and at least five grandchildren.
