Narrative

[Obituary for Edna M. Miller, from the Fort Benton River Press, date unknown; posted online to the FindaGrave.com website.]

Mrs. Edna M. Miller, 79, a resident of Chouteau county for well over a half a century, died Saturday evening, April 3, 1971, at the St Clare Hospital in this city.

Funeral services were held this Wednesday afternoon at 2 P.M. at the Benton Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Barnes of the Community Methodist church at Geraldine officiating. Burial was in Riverside cemetery, and pallbearers, all grandsons, were Roger, Raymond, Robert, Randy Williams, Donald and Oscar James Trunk, Richard and Robert Miller.

Edna Mae Weible was born in Cameron, Missouri, on March 19, 1892. She married Felix Oscar Miller March 4, 1910, at Lima, Ohio. She came to Montana and the Eagle Butte community in 1914 where her husband had taken up a homestead. The couple ranched at Eagle Butte until they retired and moved to Fort Benton in 1950. Mr. Miller died in April, 1954.She had continued to make her home here until her death.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Williams, Big Sandy, and Mrs. Helen Trunk, Geraldine; two brothers, McKinley Weible, La Grange, Indiana, and Victor Weible, Summerville, Missouri; a sister, Mrs. Grace Ricoff, Evanston, Illinois; 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. A son, Richard Miller, died in 1965.

Narrative

Both Edna's obituary and her husband Felix's obituary give their marriage date as 4 Mar 1910, while the indexed marriage record gives their marriage date as 4 Mar 1911. Whether this is a transcription error in the indexing is unknown to me at this point, as I cannot verify the original marriage record at this time. I will note that their firstborn, Richard, was born in mid-September 1911, so it is possible that they "moved" their marriage date as a polite fiction the two of them offered their family and friends if they were a few months pregnant when they married.
